Is this package a good buy? I am tempted to buy the 256 GB.....

I would check out the Apple website. This is not the IPad Air, just a entry level IPad. Remember they usually throw in a bunch of cheap gizmos you don't need to jack up the price and make it into sometime it's not. Do your research.

compare at Apple

you don't need all those extras, all u need to start is a case, 

and unless you plan on keeping stuff on the actual pad you don't need to spend extra for 256,  mine is about 2 years old and plenty of space

64 gb ipad at Apple is under 250

I checked out Apple site and yes this is a good buy.  The carry case and the keyboard are a nice extra and would cost more from the Apple site.  And you can try this out to see if it suits your needs.

I am deciding whether to get this or upgrade my macbook air which I LOVE but it is 7 years old and browser needs updating.

You can go to the Apple website and scroll down and compare models.

I have had two iPads and use the on screen keyboard.  DH got the outside keyboard.....it makes the iPad extremely heavy.

I have only used the on screen keyboard...no need for the other is there?

I've had tablet keyboards but have never used one.  I prefer to use a holder that fits on my hand and kick back in my recliner.  I don't want or need any of the junk they sell as "accessories".  I prefer to save $100+ on the price of the pad at the online Apple Store plus I can get it engraved free.  I have one on order right now.
