We purchased a Dell laptop just about a year ago and we are getting the notice to renew Microsoft Office. Has anyone done this online or is that the only way to do it? Could we purchase the software ourselves and just download it so that it could be permanently on the computer?
We are not technically minded so any advice would be great!

Yes, you can purchase it from Microsoft, itself, or from BestBuy or in many other places. Also, there are free software packages that are said to perform like Microsoft Office. Do some googling to learn more.

I have Ofiice 365 Personal. You can call Microsoft and ask about renewal options. https://products.office.com/en-us/compare-microsoft-office-products
There is a red "Talk to an Expert" tab. You will find a phone number under the tab.

@Lovethesea If we purchase from Best Buy or other retailer, would it be a permanent one or a yearly renewal?
I googled Microsoft Dupe and they are out there, but there are more sites for how to remove the dupes. I am thinking it might not be the way to go.

@tends2dogs On the BestBuy website it appears that both options are available.
ETA: When I was teaching at a university, I purchased the Microsoft 2004 Student and Teacher Edition for my MAC Powerbook in disk form and it included 3 Installs. A few years ago I purchased a MacBook and installed my 2004 edition on it and have never had a problem with in even though although my edition is 11 yrs. old!
If you are a student or teacher, I would suggest that you seek a "student and teacher edition" in order to save $$$. Also, look for an edition that has a few installs. IHTH.

@Lovethesea Thanks so much! Not a teacher, just two retired people that use their computers for very little. Will check out BestBuys!

I would just say that if you are being asked to pay money to renew the software every year - that's a rip.
I buy this software online - you get the case, the CD, and the product key, and it works for three computers INDEFINITELY. There should be no annual fee.

CB, Microsoft does not sell Office 365 with unlimited use anymore. I "brought" Office 365 Personal in March 2015 and will pay again in 2016.
You may want to check their site for the current options.
