Jeff Bezos reportedly said in an interview that they didn't make nearly enough Echos and he apologized for that and said more were on the way. We'll have to see what happens down the road, but knowing Amazon, I'm betting they'll honor the $99 price for those of us who signed up to get one. They may even toss us a bone (an extra month or two (maybe six?) of Prime) as a reward for our patience. (Heck, with the glut of Fire Phones they reportedly have they may just toss one in free with every Echo.) We'll have to see what happens, but I have faith in Amazon. They're generally very customer centric. They don't want any more annoyed customers than possible and they'll try to find a way to make us happy.

I'm glad I got it and hope everyone else gets theirs soon too. I agree it is basically a speaker with voice recognition. I think it's definitely worth 99.00 for me because I wanted it basically to listen to music like a radio.
It has the a city near for my weather and for right now I can't change it but I can give my city and get the same weather. I asked alexa to change the default city but she gave an answer similar to womp womp but not a womp womp. so I sent feedback on the echo app. and they set instructions on how to change the zip code.
they let you send feedback for everything you ask it on the app if she heard you right.
I say P A not pennsylvania and it does not recognize that.
To play an audible book or something else you have on a device turn on bluetooth on your device and ask alexa to set up bluetooth then you can stream from your device to echo and echo does not recognize what you are playing. the app says now streaming on bluetooth.
I think amazon would definitely want to make them as fast as they could for everyone And is it a criteria they have for invite selection or a lottery or both. I think they wanted to know their market before they made a boatload because the tape on shipping box said amazon fire phone.

Yeah, Amazon misread the demand on Echo's. They've supposedly ramped up production now, so with any luck those of us still on the outside looking in will get one soon. They'd earlier misread demand for a Fire phone in the other direction and assumed there'd be a great demand for it, only to find out there wasn't and ended up with a warehouse full of the things. That's one of the big challenges in technology. You never know where the demand will be.
Amazon is now largely alone in the home based personal assistant category, so they aren't under undue pressure. If/when Apple/Google/HP/Sony/Microsoft come out with a similar product (and you know they will) then Amazon will have to be ready to compete head to head. They could be building a huge installed base right now if they had the product available, but having gambled and lost on the Fire phone they were a bit antsy launching a whole new product category. I suspect they now realize how big the Echo can be and are racing it to market. The potential is huge and the more they get out before the competition arrives the better for Amazon.
The 2015 CES (starting 1/04/2015) will likely show off similar products by other manufacturers in some stage of development and Amazon would be smart to get Echo's in the hands of consumers before they hear of other options. The CES is a toy show for techies and I'd be shocked if some/many of the big manufacturers don't have an Echo like product (at least in prototype form) ready to show off. Heck, if I was attending and I was a Sony, Microsoft, Apple, HP, or Google I'd cobble together some sort of Echo like device and lots of add-ons (stereo speaker, IR remote transceiver to make the device into the ultimate voice activated universal remote, outlet/switches controlled by the device, etc.) just for the buzz it would generate. The consumer side of an Echo isn't all that much. It's largely a speaker, microphones, and some minimal processing/data transfer hardware. The real work happens back with the servers connected to the Echo. Make a pretty box, say it'll rival or surpass the Echo and throw it out there for the show goers to ogle and you'll slow the adoption of Echo and give consumers an alternative to wait for. Echo owns the market now, but that won't last long. Any of the competitors who comes out with a comparable product will likely get a lot of buzz out of the CES and steal Echo's thunder. Amazon better get Echo's into the hands of consumers quickly if they want more market share.

Yes!!!! I now have the option to buy an Echo! (Finally!!!) I won't be able to order it before Thursday (which is pay day) but more invites have now gone out and I'm finally on the invited list. It was just a question of time.

gardenman, I'm glad you finally got an invite! I'm still waiting for mine.
I read one of the reviews for the Echo remote that the person spoke with Amazon customer service and was told that the testing phase for the Echo will be over mid January. After that, everyone will be able to buy an Echo, including Prime Members for the $99 price. We'll see.

Yay gardenman!!! Congratulations!! I cannot wait to hear your review.
Lainey -- I hope whoever wrote that is right. I would love to have one for $99. I guess we just have to wait. Thanks for the info.
