Re: 8.1 cursor freezes, touchpad doesn't respond, lap runs hot and fan is noisy

FYI...windows 7 games can be installed on windows 8 fairly easily. Do a google search for a YouTube entry called get windows 7 games in windows 8. I have done this on more than one win 8 computer and the games run fine. You do need to have a win 7 computer with the same bit configuration (32 or 64) as your win 8 computer to copy the games from, but after that it's a piece of cake.

Happy gaming!

Thanks, Buster. I'll definitely look into it. I do have Win7 64bit that would match up. I cannot believe how complicated this has seemed so far. I've read some things that were just way above my knowledge level but if there is a way that isn't so super, computer programmer, technological, I'm on it! Smiley Happy

I apologize for totally saying what somebody else already said. I hate that and so I'm usually very good about reading what everybody says in a thread before replying. Sorry, Nightowlz! Bad little chicky.

You will really enjoy Classic Shell, Colliegirls! It's a great help and you have a lot of choices that will make things easier for you.

I just had one old laptop die and rotated out two that were old, and I got another new Toshiba. Except for having set up my husband's new Windows 8.1 laptop, it's my first experience with Win8.1. Man, it can be frustrating! Looks like some kind of kiddie game to me.

But I just use the ClassicShell to make things easier to find. Plus I really like having the start button/menu AND I finally figured out how to get the Quick Launch bar back on the new operating system.

Here's the one thing about which I'm really rather irked - no solitaire game! Smiley Sad I've searched far and wide and finally found what I thought was the right one to add and went through this whole Microsoft account thing that I do NOT like. I have to wait 60 days for it to be removed because it doesn't have any program that I can just uninstall (insidious, that!).

I wish I could find the solitaire game like I had with Windows 7 and prior. I don't do other games or any online games. I cannot believe how many things they seem to take away with each new OS. Ok, done whining. Smiley Happy

No problem chickenbutt. The more posts about it the more people will see it. Hope the Classic Shell helps everyone using Win 8.1 DH has both the tiles & the Classic Shell on his laptop. My sister does not like the tiles either. I don't know much about it since I mostly use the desktop that has Win 7 on it. The only thing DH dislikes about Win 8.1 is it does not have the backup like Win 7 has.

There have been a few reports on other computer forums about people with Windows 8 having their computer fan run loudly. Is it their pc or Windows 8?

It didn't say what brand of pc they had or how much power it had. I did see many suggesting to avoid cheap computers like some of the ones QVC tries to sell.

Certain brands have a high return rate (ASUS was one of the ones).

I would return it if within the 30 days or try to contact QVC or DELL for a resolution or suggestions....

I'm waiting for Windows 8.2 to come out sometime in August which addresses some of the problems customers have had and it will be going back to an easier start-up format like the oilder Windows version.

OMG, I can't wait!! A REAL START SCREEN??? Who in the world needs those goofy "tiles?" Just a stupid gimmick. I have my screen defaulted to the old Windows desktop with shortcuts. That is the only way to get things done. But still no start screen. And I hate the way one has to click all around the edges of the screen to get certain menus to pop up. How stupid is that?

Just download the Classic Shell on 8.1 it's free & you will have the Windows 7 start button.
http://www.classicshell.net/

I do have the start button, but it does not bring up the start screen as Win 7 did, with a listing of the programs on top and all of the products listed to the right with submenus. It's just a pointer to a totally different format of start, not as complete or understandable as the one in the prior Windows versions. That is the one I hope will come back.

I think they change things just to change them. There was no reason to change the start process. Did you download this and get the Win 7 start screen (not just a button)? If so, I will surely download it. Thanks.

You can go to the link & see screen shots of it. I mostly use our desktop that has Win 7 on it. DH has Win 8.1 on one of his laptops & his desktop or home screen looks just like mine. Has folders & shortcut links. When you click on the window icon at the lower left it brings up the menu with all the programs.

Re: 8.1 cursor freezes, touchpad doesn't respond, lap runs hot and fan is noisy

Thanks, Nightowlz! For me, and also my husband when I set up his new Win8.1 computer, the Classic Shell program is priceless. You can still go to the tile deal, or you can just choose to use the start menu and all that, that you are accustomed to. Choices are good, IMO. I don't know why they just keep taking basic stuff away.

I discovered Classic Shell even back when I got my first Win7 computer and wanted some stuff from the Vista OS, so even my Win7 computers have it.

Buster - Woo hoo! I got the Windows 7 games moved to my Windows 8.1 computer. Thanks for the recommendation to find that guy's YouTube video. Once I got past the mental block of 'I don't think I can do this' I just took it one step at a time. I don't get why they would take away all the Microsoft games. No es Bueno. Smiley Sad

Now, my new Win8.1 computer is complete - well, except for the keyboard skin. The place in China where I've been getting them lately sent the wrong one. But those guys are great and saw the problem, and are getting me the right one.
