Re: 8.1 cursor freezes, touchpad doesn't respond, lap runs hot and fan is noisy

DH has a new HP laptop he got for Christmas. It has 8.1 on it & does not run hot. He says his older laptop ran hotter then this one. He has one of those lap cooling pads but it was still hot to sit on his lap to use while sitting in his recliner. Does not have that problem with the new one. There is a classic shell you can download for free on 8.1 that has Windows 7 start button. Check it out here. http://www.classicshell.net/

I would send back the laptop you bought & buy something else instead of dealing with the problems. Send it back as defective & let them pay the return shipping.

Thank you for the classic shell link. I am moving on to Windows 8.1. I have a new Dell desktop coming next week. I will see first hand what all the noise is about.

There have been a few reports on other computer forums about people with Windows 8 having their computer fan run loudly. Is it their pc or Windows 8?

It didn't say what brand of pc they had or how much power it had. I did see many suggesting to avoid cheap computers like some of the ones QVC tries to sell.

Certain brands have a high return rate (ASUS was one of the ones).

I would return it if within the 30 days or try to contact QVC or DELL for a resolution or suggestions....

I'm waiting for Windows 8.2 to come out sometime in August which addresses some of the problems customers have had and it will be going back to an easier start-up format like the oilder Windows version.

OMG, I can't wait!! A REAL START SCREEN??? Who in the world needs those goofy "tiles?" Just a stupid gimmick. I have my screen defaulted to the old Windows desktop with shortcuts. That is the only way to get things done. But still no start screen. And I hate the way one has to click all around the edges of the screen to get certain menus to pop up. How stupid is that?

Just download the Classic Shell on 8.1 it's free & you will have the Windows 7 start button.

I do have the start button, but it does not bring up the start screen as Win 7 did, with a listing of the programs on top and all of the products listed to the right with submenus. It's just a pointer to a totally different format of start, not as complete or understandable as the one in the prior Windows versions. That is the one I hope will come back.

I think they change things just to change them. There was no reason to change the start process. Did you download this and get the Win 7 start screen (not just a button)? If so, I will surely download it. Thanks.

I bought the March Dell TSV with the i9 processor, 8 mb memory, Win 8, and 1 TB hard drive that I have since upgraded to 8.1 (which I still dislike).

However my laptop runs cool as a cucumber, I hardly know it's on, no fan sound at all, no heat emanating from the chassis . . . in other words, physically, the computer is fantastic.

The pop-ups still happen inappropriately but that IS Win 8 and 8.1. However, overall, I am very happy with the Dell computer I bought. Just can't wait to get the OS bugs out of it.

That is NOT are part of the operating system. I have a Dell computer with Windows 8.1 Dell and the latest updates and no popups. If you have popups, you have malware.

Not worth it.

I bought a cooling fan on amazon and so far I'm happy with it.

I also removed the battery and when you google this it may or may not help with it because I have mine plugged in on desk and never move it and don't use it on battery.

If you install Classic Shell you can have back many of the features you were used to, but that disappeared with Win8.x. For some reason it's not letting me turn it into a link so if you just go to classicshell.net you'll see it. Just be careful you don't go to another website that looks like it because I almost did that once and it was a whole bag thing that wanted to install a bunch of stuff on my computer. Classicshell.net Smiley Happy

ETA - plus it gives you back your 'start' button and the menu that is included in that and a number of other things so you don't have to deal with that childish looking tiles thing. Smiley Happy

Re: 8.1 cursor freezes, touchpad doesn't respond, lap runs hot and fan is noisy

I apologize for totally saying what somebody else already said. I hate that and so I'm usually very good about reading what everybody says in a thread before replying. Sorry, Nightowlz! Bad little chicky.

You will really enjoy Classic Shell, Colliegirls! It's a great help and you have a lot of choices that will make things easier for you.

I just had one old laptop die and rotated out two that were old, and I got another new Toshiba. Except for having set up my husband's new Windows 8.1 laptop, it's my first experience with Win8.1. Man, it can be frustrating! Looks like some kind of kiddie game to me.

But I just use the ClassicShell to make things easier to find. Plus I really like having the start button/menu AND I finally figured out how to get the Quick Launch bar back on the new operating system.

Here's the one thing about which I'm really rather irked - no solitaire game! Smiley Sad I've searched far and wide and finally found what I thought was the right one to add and went through this whole Microsoft account thing that I do NOT like. I have to wait 60 days for it to be removed because it doesn't have any program that I can just uninstall (insidious, that!).

I wish I could find the solitaire game like I had with Windows 7 and prior. I don't do other games or any online games. I cannot believe how many things they seem to take away with each new OS. Ok, done whining. Smiley Happy

Re: 8.1 cursor freezes, touchpad doesn't respond, lap runs hot and fan is noisy

FYI...windows 7 games can be installed on windows 8 fairly easily. Do a google search for a YouTube entry called get windows 7 games in windows 8. I have done this on more than one win 8 computer and the games run fine. You do need to have a win 7 computer with the same bit configuration (32 or 64) as your win 8 computer to copy the games from, but after that it's a piece of cake.

Happy gaming!

Re: 8.1 cursor freezes, touchpad doesn't respond, lap runs hot and fan is noisy

{#emotions_dlg.biggrin} O/P I just got a new computer [Toshiba brand.] and it works just fine. I would sent the computer back. You do have a warranty? Don't you? I have no problems with the 8.1 because there is no difference in this then in my other computer with windows 8. Everyone will have to upgrade to windows 8.1 by 2015 anyway, and my older computer was giving me problems so I brought this Toshiba . Good luck to you!
