You can email yourself from your iPad to a comp to backup w/o a dongle.  Especially if you use Dropbox.  Dropbox supplies links to everything you store.  iCloud does not do that.

@Mz iMac, I don't use Dropbox.  DH had it on my HP to store salmon fishing videos.

I have never used Dropbox.  I wonder if you will be able to buy a hard drive that links directly to the new IMac or if you just use the dongle.  This change in connections is a PIA.  I suppose in time everything will have the new Apple connection?  LM

Since the vast majority of people use a Windows based computers, I doubt it.  If you buy directly from Apple, you may have a hard drive with a connection that doesn't need an adapter.  You buy one USB to Thunderbolt 3 adapter and use it for all of your USB devices.  This advise is for the new Macbook pro.

@glb613 Thanks.  A trip to the Apple store is on my list.  LM

iMacs are "desktop" computers.  All desktop computers have the necessary ports.

I love Mac computers.  If I was interested in purchasing a "laptop", I check it out.  Right now we have an iPhone, iPad and an iMac.  All are working just fine.  No need to trade or upgrade.

I use this iMac.  It has a 27" screen which is excellent for some of the work I do using spreadsheets or desigining some forms.  I had a MacBook years ago.  It never left my desk.  And the small screen was a pain.  That's when I decided to go desktop.

As I was waiting for an appointment the other day, I was reading about Apple computers, reviews of the new MacBook Pro, etc.  Prior to this browsing, I was thinking to myself that perhaps I should opt for the MacBook Air because I don't  really need the pro with its big price tag and so on.

When I queried when the last update was done for the Air, I came across an article that said the Air was basically not going to be updated again as there are now three versions of the Pro and the cheapest Pro will be the replacement for the Air.  Haha on me.  Good thing I'm not in a rush to replace my computer.

Just passing this on in case anyone else is looking around for a new computer.  I usually take my time and read for awhile before I hit the store.  The problem with me when I hit the store is I am usually tempted to buy right away.  LM

That is a whole lot of dough just to casually play around.  I wonder how much the old ones will be or if any will be available, Air or Mac.  Maybe I should start checking out  13" Chromebooks.
