I ordered a top this evening and used a promo code that expires tomorrow. I decided to cancel my order for the top. I found another item to purchase and tried to apply my promo code. I received a message that the promo code was already used. This makes no sense to me. Since I had canceled the other item, I should be able to apply the promo code to another item. Guess who is not making a purchase then? Forget it!

@lotusmagician  You should call customer service. The system is not reflecting your change of mind. Most likely you'll need assistance for this.

I did that once, they would not refund.  Told me it can only be used one time.  If cancel the order, it can't be transferred to a new order.

Doesn't seem right.  That happened to me at Bloomingdale's one time.  They did honor it for the second order.

I guess some retailers want to keep their customers more than other retailers.

@lotusmagician.  I don't know of a single site that a allows a person to use a code more than once.  There has always been a warning that any change can result in loss of benefits.  Once used,  it's gone whether it's fulfilled or not.  Sorry, but you're out of luck.

@lotusmagician  Having worked in retail for 42 years I can tell you that you stand a better chance getting to re-use that coupon at a brick and mortar store than you do online. That's not to say that the Q won't give you any satisfaction. A lot of times the manager will say that they'll make an exception this time. The only thing I can say is when you have a coupon be extra sure you want what you ordered. One time use means you can only use it one time, and you did. Hopefully they will take into consideration that you changed your mind and want to order something different. Good Luck!

@lotusmagician - I hope you can get your code reinstated, but please don't get upset with the customer service rep if you cannot—there is a good chance the system will not allow them to override the previous usage of the code. I've definitely seen that block in similar situations at multiple companies; unfortunately, computers can't be reasoned with and are only capable of doing what they're programmed to do.

I agree with the other posters that this practice is pretty much  universal at websites.  Once you use that coupon it disappears, doesn't matter if the order is then cancelled.

I've read this same post on numerous occasion and it's been made clear the coupon code is for one time use only.
