I did do this. My grandmother had a trailer on the Susquehanna River and we would walk down a steep hill and fill, I think buckets with water,  they didn't have too much plastic.  It was interesting, I was about 8 and my grandmother and great aunt about 60.  Not a today 60!  As for running water, I honestly do not know.  A few years later she moved to a normal house and we stopped getting the water?  Great memories.
