My theory is that when a thread does not need to be deleted, but is obviously headed there, it is shut down before it gets worse.

henny, I think sometimes they do it when they clean up the contentious posts and leave the others. Also, I think they have started doing it on old threads to keep the crazies from bumping up tons of threads late at night.

Usually, I agree they might as well just take it down.

Seen it many times. I agree with your statement "you must have been asleep at the switch" or maybe you just don't get into some "iffy" threads often enough to see this. :-) =^..^=

I don't quite get why they don't just "delete" them like they do others. If they are offensive or break the, heaven forbid, Community Standards, wipe 'em out like go "poof".
