wedding cake customs

I started a thread about weddings yesterday and was wondering about the bride and groom cutting the first piece and giving each other a taste of the cake. Sometimes they go nuts and smash the cake into their faces to be funny but I always thought this was kind of cruel. Okay, I'm early 60ish so bear with me if you do not know what I am talking about how wedding receptions used to be years ago! Don't forget the congo line and chicken dance after everyone had a few drinks!
