I was born and raised in Lancaster, PA, and have lived in Maryland since 1971, had my children, built a house, raised our family. I got a divorce 6 years ago after 40 years. Five years ago, after getting his Electrical Engineering degree, my son went to Washington University Law School in St. Louis. Each Fall break, I would take Amtrak and go out to visit with him for that week, and them take the train back home again. I did that for 3 years, and I absolutely loved it. Being with my son was wonderful, and I loved St. Louis - the museums, the Botannical Gardens, the St. Louis Basilica, the Zoo and all the wonderful restaurants. Well, he graduated almost 3 years ago now, so since his graduation I have obviously not done that anymore. He now works as a Patent Lawyer in D.C. - about 50 minutes away from me.
I've lived in the East all my life, and yet I long to do that again .... I know no one can "relive" wonderful moments like that, but still ..... I just loved going out there. Sometimes I even think maybe I should move there, but I know (in my head) it wouldn't be the same.
This year it was particularly tough .... When it got to Oct. 17, which is about when I'd board the Amtrak, I almost felt grief. In my mind I relived everything we used to do and the places we ate.
My two grown daughters live 4 hours away (south of here), and my son is 50 min. away in Old Town Alexandria (right outside of D.C.), so to move to St. Louis would be crazy at my age (66). I just wanted to share this.
