Friends know I'm not a slave to my phone, voice mail, email, texting.

I keep the phone on silent - leave a message and I'll get back to them.

I don't answer my land line unless I know the caller.  Leave a message.

I think texting is best used for quick questions or check-ins, not extended conversations.

send and receive texts often. love it and would not be without a smart phone now, especially  because of my children.

yes, i do walk away from the phone for periods of time.

i dont have it attached to my body.

if i dont respond to a text for whatever reason, please feel free to just text me again and i will be sure to respond.

That's all I use my phone for is texting.

I have all sounds turned off except the noise it makes when I receive a text which is turned down low so I never hear it. I have to keep checking my phone to see if I have any texts.

It is what it is. LOL!!! I don't want to hear all the noises the phone makes plus I turned the ringer off on home phone. I check caller id almost daily to see if I need to return any calls.

My sister practically refuses to text and I'm beginning to understand why.  My daughter or granddaughter will text me, we'll be having a nice conversation, and I'll reply asking some question and then....nothing.  Like they fell off the face of the earth.  So I wait several hours, then a day, then I'll finally text them back saying, "did you get my last text?".  Maybe several hours later I'll get a reply saying, "sorry, I forgot", "sorry, I was busy", "sorry, my phone died" (understandable) or  some other excuse.

Why do they just leave a person hanging like that?  I mean, they're right there, in the middle of a conversation.  And they just disappear.  So annoying.  I originally started texting because I know they have busy lives and I don't want to interrupt with phone calls, and I figure a few texts back and forth is less intrusive but still keeps us connected.

I'm wondering if I'm being unreasonable in my expectations or is it just a tendency of todays younger generation to disregard common courtesy?

@caroln242 Yes I think you are expecting way too much.  Do you expect people to be at your beck and call? You have no idea what is going on in their lives and what comes or what phone rings, or it's time to go.

Text and wait as long as you want then get back to it later.  Text without expecting a reply right back all the time, or if ever for that matter.   It's a spur of the moment thing as I see it, not a social commitment.

Me too!  I think it's rude to just abandon the texting without so much as a "talk later" or "have to go" or something.  I mean, how much time can it take to text 2 or 3 words?  If it was a phone call would they just hang up on you if they got too busy to talk?  Same/same.

Man plans. God laughs.

It’s not just the younger generation. I have a sisters-in-law who regularly does that to me. She usually starts the conversation, some random thing, I reply and say more about what she said or even ask a question. She might come back in an hour or she might not. Or I’ve told her something that would typically get a response from anyone else but she drops it. I never know what I’m going to get.

@Nightowlz  Our ringer is turned off on our landline, too. All the calls were nobody and I was tired of hurrying to the phone for nothing. Love the silence. If anyone needs to call they can leave a message. But the important people have all our cell phone numbers.
