When my son was away at college (out of state), I contacted a local bakery in his area, and had a cake delivered from there.
Just another suggestion. :-)

@hennypenny I was reading the suggestions you received regarding the birthday cake and other options. I have used them all with the exception of one and I do not think you can go wrong with any of the options offered. Such a very kind gesture on your part to want to send a cake. It is the thought that counts and I am certain any item received will be a precious memory to the person. BTW...need my address for any just let me know ROFL

Hi hennypenny,
Yes, I have ordered cakes from Bale Me A Wish several times. My recipient really enjoyed them. Mind you it went from NY to NJ, but they were always delivered on time and tasty (according to my friend). I had a good experience using them. Hope this helps!

Just make sure that the bakery is well versed on sending cakes. Over 20 years ago, I saw a segment on the Today show about favorfite cakes. Al Roker's segment was about Red Velvet Cake. I never heard of it before and was intrigued about this southern cake. I live in NYC.
I went to Chattanooga TN for business and I asked abut them. My contact couldn't find one that day but was kind enough to mail me a cake to my work. Well, do you know what a Red Velvet Cake looks like when mailed improperly? Dog food. The cake fell apart. Of course, we New Yorkers never saw a red cake before and dug in anyway. It was delicious albeit looked digusting. Fast forward, Red Velvet Cake is now commonplace here in the city and I do still enjoy it.

Thank you everyone for your help and suggestions.
We ended up ordering a Tiramisu cake from Juniors.
It is somewhat like a cake he adored as a child that came from a bakery in San Francisco. The Q didn't have it in stock, but I was able to get it directly from Juniors.

I ordered directly from Juniors and I got the cake fast and in perfect condition. From New York to California.
