I do not like the idea that if you have medication that needs refrif. there is a charge. Of course, that gets into the whole privacy thing.

@cheriere Anything like that can be monitored electronically, sad to say.

@Franklinbell I've traveled a bit and never heard of such. You would be doing many of us a favor by naming the hotel. Was it part of a chain or an independent? I only stay at Marriott and love them.

I can see them being able to monitor how many times it was opened. But, if it is filled with expensive snacks and waters seems like they'd want you to look inside frequently in hopes you'd purchase something.
I can't see ordinary places putting that kind of technology in mini fridges either. It must've been an extraordinarily fancy place.

Buy your own mini fridge that holds 6 cans of pop to store a few things in. It should fit your meds which would be cheaper than their rent.
We always travel with an ice chest. I only drink cold water.
Never been in a hotel where they told us we had to pay extra for using fridge or opening the door?
Next they will want to charge to watch TV?

I can't imagine how on earth they'd know if you even opened it up? They couldn't possibly have known whether or not you put your medicine inside either.
I don't think they will know if you open it. How much would it cost them to install monitoring devices in all the rooms with a refrigerator? You wouldn't think they would spend money to do that. It makes no sense?
I guess it does make sense if you are staying at an expensive hotel.

EXACTLY!!! I can't see any place spending the money to do that.

That's a great option if you travel by car. Not very convenient for air travel.

If the place doesn't want you to use the refrigerator in your room, they shouldn't have put it in there. Just crazy!

I have seen these type of fridges for at least 20 years or more. They are stocked with drinks....water, soft drinks, beer and hard liquor and sometimes cold treats.
In the top of the unit there is usually a place card with the prices of the items in the fridge. It also explains that you cannot use the fridge to hold your own items.
The items are monitored by weight. As soon as you pick up an item....you will be charged for it.
This is different than the fridge, microwave and coffee maker supplied for your use.
I have seen these fridges in the US, Canada, Asia and Europe.
