We have a ton of change in a huge urn that I was going to turn in for cash at the start of all this because people were saying the banks/atm may not be accessible.

Never cashed in because only the drive thru was open and didn't want to make a *special appointment* to use the coin machine inside.  That could be part of the problem, too.  People have jars and jars of coins sitting at home, you can't deposit coins at the atm, I don't think they like them coming thru the shute at the atm, either.  Not sure though.

We went to Lowe's yesterday and for the first time I saw the sign about change.  Unfortunately, DH's military discount didn't come off the total so we had to go to CS desk and they handed me cash and 98 cents.  Didn't ask if we had 2 pennies, which we didn't anyways.

@ScrapHappy

I read also that Kroger stores will no longer give 'change', instead they will put the change amount onto your Kroger 'loyalty' card to be used for future purchases.

But what happens to those people that don't use 'loyalty' cards?

My MIL refuses to use them, she's convinced that 'loyalty' cards are just the store's way of 'tracking' her purchases, why that would bother her I don't know.

It's happening at Walmart and Safeway too. I use a credit card 99% of the time.

It's a real thing, and it's in many places. It seems to be getting worse in my area too.

Some businesses are only taking credit, especially curb side restaurant stuff, because they don't want their employees trying to make change in the lot, or running back and forth and handling money and food delivery to your car.

A guy at a local gas station told my friend the other day that if she could pay part of her bill in quarters he'd appreciate it, as the bank is only allowing them one roll of quarters per day. I've run a business and that is crazy to think you can function on just one roll of quarters for the day.

My son said he heard that our Walmart would still take cash but if you didn't have the exact change, they would have to round up. I heard on tv that Kroger was rounding up for charity or would give you your change on some kind of credit if you didn't have exact change.

Other places seem to have plenty of change and are business as usual.

I have always kept lots of small bills and a lot of change, for just such issues. Sometimes during wide spread and prolonged power outages, cash is king because they can't run cards, so we have always keep some on hand.

They are a way of tracking you, she is right.

The stores do it to target you with emails, and coupons and offers that are based on your buying history.

And there are those that believe that buying from anywhere that tracks you with a loyalty card or a membership card (like Sam's or Costco) is a way of tracking what you buy, what you have, in case the government wants to come and get what you have in a martial law situation, or in a rationing situation. I know that explanation won't go over big here, but confiscation and prosecution of people 'hoarding' both food and gold has happened in our history during times of war. So many older people don't want anything to do with those kinds of cards for that type of reason as well.

I just got back from Citibank ... I had $43 worth of rolled coins to deposit in my checking account.

There was a sign on the teller's window that "due to the coin shortage" there was a limted on coins per request.

So you're saying the United States lacks common cents?

It's been in the news for awhile and some businesses I've been in have a sign at checkout.  My bank is waiving the fee for non-customers to turn in change.  Other change news is about the penny.  Threatening again to stop making them.
