Well, the truth isn't always classy.
The politics aside, there really is not much comparison in their relationships. The Reagans were very devoted to each other, but President Kennedy was not at all. The public built this idea of a Camelot, and we just weren't yet in the time of the media exposing the truth about our leaders. To continue to pretend it was something it wasn't is just foolish and kidding no one.

I'm sure you have intimate knowledge of both marriages outside of media reporting.
(eyeroll intended)
I don't want to get into one of your circular arguments here, so continue your venom without me. It's not worth my time.
Exactly.

wow! you saw it totally differently than I did...
Back in 1953 public displays of affection were frowned upon. In private my parents were very lovey dovey - to the point that we kids teased them about it - but NEVER outside of the house.
It's the way a man looks at a woman when he's in love with her, he can't help but look "that certain way" JFK doesn't look that way to me.

I got that same impression looking at the photos. I don't expect any physical signs of affection. But I would expect something in the way he looks at her. The photo of them walking on the beach with him in front and her following him made me feel like he was almost disinterested. She is radiant when she looks at him.
Exactly!!!!!

In every photo they showed on TV of Nancy and Ronald together, he had such an adoring look in his eyes that was endearing and genuine. On the other hand, history has proven that Camelot was unfortunately not what it appeared to be.
That's whay I mean, a man really in love just looks at the woman he loves in a way that you know he's madly in love with her, he can't help it. It's not about public displays of affection.

I thought everyone knew the Kennedy kids did as they were told or what was approved by Joseph Kennedy. Jackie fit in perfectly to what the old man wanted for his son and his future political ambitions.
After all, look what he did to his daughter Rosemary.

@Mothertrucker- I guess they were happy then but generally, not a very happy marriage later on.

That family and their past and their 'ways' has long been uncovered.
Agreed, I have very little respect for them.....
I've never understood the near worshiping of them and their relationship (perhaps back in the day when the media never exposed things like they do today, and people were unaware of all the true issues), since the truth has come out over the years.
I see no reason to pine for, or admire what that was, behind closed doors and in reality. It is no more romantic, or classy or dignified than what goes on in most of today's entertainment world, yet people are fascinated and buy into it for some reason.

It all depends on your political perspective, I suppose.
There is a sense of "near worship" of the Reagan administration on the other side of the aisle. I don't understand that.
The Kennedy years are romanticized, I suppose, but no more than the Reagan years are as well. I choose not denigrate either one because I find that to be a very un-classy thing to do on threads like these.
@mstyrion 1- I don't think it is political. There are books written about both families and both President's crossed party lines for the benefit of the Country; today that is an impossibility. Both First Ladies had a fabulous sense of fashion and both presidents were well liked but not without flaws. it is not easy to live in a fish bowl. We expect politicians and their wives and family to be perfect and none were/are. Reagan was well liked by both sides and his best friend was Pat Moynihan, the most liberal of all at the time. Both families contributed and sacrificed for our Country. But, one can't dispute that Ronnie and Nancy are a beautiful love story.

@Mominohio- I think it was the youth factor....we had so many older presidents and it was refreshing to see them. I met Jackie three times in NYC, once at the hairdressers; she was gracious and almost shy; it was during her Onasis days and later. She made it a point to raise Carolyn and John with minimal contact with the Kennedys; it would have been interesting to see what she did post presidency had he lived. The Reagans were totally different; it was said that they were not great parents because he loved Nancy and Country first and she loved and was devoted to Ronnie, his career and image. There wasn't much left after that. Jackie on the other hand, was a great parent and devoted to her children.

@proudlyfromNJ- there are many books about the Kennedys and Joe Kennedy was not a nice man. I think they were a beautiful family but so much tragedy. Maybe they were in love at that time, I can't tell but she loved her kids. I admired Jackie post Flotus .....she raised good kids with values and as far away from the Kennedys as she could.

They were healthy and good looking 20 year olds enjoying the beach which is all that the pictures say to me.
All one has to do is read the history of Joseph P Kennedy who outlived 3 of his 4 sons to understand; Camelot indeed, which btw was invented by Jackie not the press. The eternal flame at her husband's grave was also her idea.
And then there's Joesph's daughter Rosemary who he forced to have a lobotomy. She is the smiling girl on the bottom right; how terrible for her.
