I don't think that way. "They" can label everyone but we are all individuals. That is how I think of people - each one separately.

Well, I work with high school students.

Most, if not all, work.  They all have plans for after high school:  college, career/tech school, military, working full time.

I would say the ones I know are a pretty ambitious group and I'm quite impressed with their plans.

So, I'm not sure about that generalization.

Interesting.  Allow me to share my perspective.

A driver’s license, the ability to drive and access to an automobile, to me, symbolize freedom.  If you find yourself in a bad situation you can get in your car and escape.  If you have an emergency or a basic need you don’t need to wait for someone else – you just get into your car and go.

Similarly, a job provides income.  Income, too, provides a degree of independence and freedom.  It provides options, choices.

Same with leaving home and striking out on your own.  Your own home, your own rules.  You have decisions, responsibilities, promises to keep.

Dating.  Implies getting along with another person and understanding someone else’s perspective, opinions, wants and needs.  This requires a degree of patience, people skills, communication skills, coping skills, maturity.

So if a person is choosing to avoid/postpone these rites of passage, are they choosing to avoid/postpone independence and freedom?

Or is it all irrelevant, since more than half of the demographic are too young to get a D/L or would only just have one, are too young to date and certainly too young to have a job (or know what one is) and set up housekeeping on their own.

How many long-term conclusions can be reached based on 40% of a demographic? Even at the top end, how many 20-22 year olds are/were living on their own in any past generation?  Most are still in some kind of schooling at that age and will not even have a permanent, career-oriented job. How could you afford rent under those circumstances?

IMO, though this artificial designation of an "age" may have been created, it's meaningless until the 14-16 year olds are 10 years older and the 5 year olds are in HS.

Yes, that's what happened.

I have a new phone, (my other one died), and I couldn't remember my throw-away e-mail address, so I accidentally created a second account.

 I think this generation realizes how competitive and dangerous it is out there today and they are more cautious. I have a feeling too that the iGEN who are able to function like this are the ones whose parents are protective and of means. I know our son got a late start because we were so protective and he's a millennial.
