there is an old legend that can tell how back your winter will be.
it is as follows.
when it snow enough to track a cat, (printws in the snow), take the date ie oct 4 and add that date to the age of the moon. so if the moon is 10days old( from the date of the new moon) add that number to the date and total is the number of snow falls thatyou have in your area. so if it snowed on oct 4 and the moon is 10 days old, you add them together and get a total of 14. i have done this for years and it is usually right on or maybe a number off.

If my snow blower quits working, I'll have a bad winter.

We don't get much snow here anymore for some reason. Now if it does anything it's generally ice with some lighter snow. Sure don't get the amounts we did over 30 yrs ago.

When it snows enough to track a cat where I live, we’ve already had a bad winter! 😸

I never heard of this, but i’ll try it. I have heard if you get a lot of acorns on the ground, winter will be bad. Also, if you see caterpillar 🐛 with a lot of black fur as opposed to brown fur, the worse winter will be. Only time will tell.

Here’s a tale : When the First snowfall covers the train track rails, check the day of the month . That will determine how many snowfalls there will be , for the winter . Sounds crazy , but it’s been right .

@Lisa Y I've also heard the story about the acorns. I think it's about giving the squirrels enough food to store away for a snowy winter.
