Re: how much protein do you need?

(thread title)

Hi @cherry,

How much do I need? What I need is something I have always based on my weight/my activities and my state of (un)health. The amount I need now is not even close to what my Nutritionist suggested I needed during my competitive running and skating days.

Right now at age double 7's, I like to get in at least around 2g per day. When I am more fit, not recovering from a major setback, I like it around 3-4g. I also base it on my body weight as with most of my serious health issues, especially my colon bleeding, I always drop a lot of weight.

Talk with your doctor and if they are familiar with nutrition(many of my doctor friends are not), see what they tell you. If they are not, maybe seeing a Nutritionist would be in order.

Don't eat the yoke of 1 daily egg?  Unless your lipid percentages are in a very high range, I doubt eating 1 egg yolk will make much difference.

Absolutely, not every body has the same needs and I am not alone.  We have a vegan friend who is very ill and has also been told she needs to eat meat.

I agree completely, @cherry and @Noel7.    So much of what's best for us is specific to the individual...  the internet has been such a gift in so many ways, but it also has created fertile ground for "gurus" who promote diets, drugs, supplements, etc., as a one-size-fits-all and who really can be quite dangerous.   Interesting thread, @cherry!

So true. Iron and B12 deficiencies are common in vegetarians, and they don't live longer either.  I tried eating that way for six months, and my immune system tanked.  My blood work also looked horrible.

I had the same results. I ended up with an A1C that was abnormal and my triglycerides were off the charts. When I went back to moderate protein, fat and ditched the grains and sugar, I had stellar results just proving that diet is not a one size fits all endeavor.

Re: how much protein do you need?

Hi @Trinity11

If you are talking "vegan" vegetarian, I tend to agree. Went lacto-ovo in the mid 1970's and until my colon bleeding problems started in 2008, my iron numbers/B-12 and Ferritin, were just fine. I quit meat/fish and foul.

More to do with my 125 blood transfusions than what food choices were and still remain the same. I did however find that while getting off of Coumadin/Warfarin helped with the bleeding, it did nothing to help my Anemia. Thus my B-12 regimen, now monthly.

Hope you are doing better and feeling stronger and more confident with each passing day.

May you and yours find 2017 to be all roses.

@hckynutJohn, if you had told me a few months ago how well I would do......I wouldn't have believed it. I am no longer in heart failure and got the go ahead to do all my normal activities. My cardiologist told me I can jog if I want to....LOL.  I don't think that will be happening but I have a lot of energy that I never thought I would regain. Apparently the kind of stents I have take six months to really heal. That must have been the magic number.

Best Wishes to both you and Cindy for a healthy and Happy New Year. Your words of encouragement throughout the year have really meant a lot to me.....And as always if not for your informative posts about heart disease on these forums, I wouldn't be here tonight posting. I owe you a debt of gratitude....

Re: how much protein do you need?

@SilleeMee

For a very long time, doctors thought that 80% of breast cancers were genetic and 20% not.

But it's actually proven to be the reverse.

So that, coupled with your having spent decades eating a mostly-healthy Asian diet and taking good care of yourself, should be reassuring.

I empathize with your anxiety, though, and my sympathies re: your mom.

My mom also developed breast cancer (at 47), but passed from a different type of the disease at 65.

If you haven't yet, try to also get some plant protein on a daily basis - nuts, beans, peanut butter, etc.

You can even get protein powder made from peas to mix into a smoothie.

BTW, eggs are now considered to be healthy for the most part, and are high in immune system -boosting selenium.
