I have not heard of tipping gas station attendants but I suppose if somebody wants to, go on ahead. ![]()
OTOH, if I ask for more I will slip some cash. Recently I was there and needed to have my oil and tires checked. I paid one of the men there to do that for me. He didn't ask me for anything and expected nothing, but I slipped him a 20 and said 'here you go, I'm buying lunch today'.
As to pumping the gas myself - I think I avoided that for a very long time. I just didn't want to. But I've been doing it for quite a while now. My complaint, however, is that it is very painful as I have severe pain issues with my hands, thumbs, and wrists. I have to find a semi-comfortable position to take and just not move while I'm doing it but it still hurts.
I only have to put gas in my car about twice a year, so it's no biggie. I don't wait until I'm close to out, however, as I don't think that is a good idea at all.

The mere suggestion that someone would tip a service station attendant is laughable, especially with gas being $4-5/gal most places.

Full service stations where I live in NE PA are rare. Ther is only one within 14 miles I can think of.
I do stop there sometimes and if it is pouring rain, sub-zero or blistering hot I flip the person a couple of bucks.
Yes, it is their job but some weather conditions are down right miserable to be out in. I appreciate the fact they are willing to do it so I can keep my substantial butt warm, dry or air conditioned.

This tipping thing has gotten ridiculous! Tipping originated as an appreciation for someone going above and beyond, a showing of special consideration - not for doing their job!
Tipping is now out of control. I couldn't believe last week when in a subway there was a 'tip' button on the credit-card machine! Wonder if anyone's gonna start tipping you doctor for doing s/he's job next
. In other words where does it end.
ITA. I.m from the era where you never tipped except a waiter or waitress. You didn't tip the delivery for your furniture, or the gas station attendent. No one tipped me for my job, that was my pay check. Out of hand for sure. I tip when someone goes out of their way to help me, not part of their job.

In 2001 we had 2 Men and aTruck help move our furniture from the loft to our addition.
We had snacks for them and did tip. The service was fine.

New Jersey doesn't allow us to pump our own gas. Don't know why.

I always pumped my own gas except for one time in NJ. I thought it was dumb. And I was right. They were really busy at this station but we were literally on fumes so I had to stop. The guy slammed the pump into my tank (I could hear alot of banging. I went to get out and he said "your done and asked for $$. I paid and got out of there because it was late and we were trying to get home (I had my son and daughter with me we were exhausted). When I got home and later that day I went and checked my vehicle and sure enough there was a big ol'scratch. Nope never ever again. I have no problem pumping my own. Have pumped the gas in the vanpool van I ride in. It' s not a big deal to me. I like knowing I am getting my full tank, it's done right and if it gets scratched it's on me. For those that think it's a hassle and a big deal that's fine. I will always do my own. After that I made sure I had a full tank before going through NJ so I wouldn't have to stop. My father taught me how to change a tire, check my oil, fill my tank etc and I am thankful.
