furminator question

We have a new kitty that we adopted from the local SPCA. I have never used a furminator before but I really want to try to keep the fur in the house under semi-control. I have brushed the cat everyday for the past 4 days and get tons of fur each time. Does it ever stop or will I always get that much fur every time? He is about four years old with short fur. He had been a stray that was picked up last month so I am assuming some of this is his winter coat that he is shedding. The website mentions brushing once a week.
