facebook question

I hope someone can help me with this question... I use Facebook to keep up with some long distance friends.. but i rarely post anything... I know there use to be an option to write something directly to the person without it appearing on the WALL.... but i don't find that since they have made all the recent changes... If that is still an available option can someone advise me where to find it...????????
