One of the most important characteristics that distinguish us from dictatorships and oligarchies is that we have a free and independent press. Every administration has had their beefs with the media.  Heaven help us, though, if the government controlled what the press is allowed to say.

Or, just as awful, if one party or another controlled the press, or one ideology or another, or small groups of individuals or organizations with agendas.  I'm seriously starting to question just how "free and independent" our press really is any more.

How many of us have seen reporters cover stories in foreign lands, only to be arrested, imprisoned or worse...executed for reporting what certain governments don't want exposed.

Lately, there have been American reporters threatened, physically abused right here in our country.  Many have spoken about the fear they feel when covering a story, yet they continue to try to unravel the thread that leads to truth.  Some people may not believe news reports (and that's their right), but don't be surprised if it gets worse.
