Americans celebrating Thanksgiving in Britain may have felt right at home as Black Friday shopping chaos caused some disruption. The practice of offering bargain basement prices the day after Thanksgiving has spread across the Atlantic, with some retailers opening overnight to lure determined shoppers.
Police blasted stores for bringing "Black Friday" to Britain, with the US sales event descending into chaotic fist fights as frenzied consumers battled to grab discounted goods.
In scenes of pandemonium around the country, common civility went out the window as yelling customers punched it out in a bid to secure reduced-price televisions and coffee makers.
Police in Manchester said three people had been arrested as the sales spiralled "out of control" after stores in the city opened at midnight. (AFP)

My neighbors mother (from there) called her this morning and told her about this. They don't celebrate Thanksgiving and she didn't understand why they had a Black Friday there. Very funny for us ... very confusing for mom. We couldn't give her an answer for the ""why"" part.

I came here from Britain in 2004. It was at least a couple of years before I learned what the "Black" meant in Black Friday, and that it wasn't because someone died. I thought it was really weird, celebrating the anniversary of some disaster by going shopping.

Why its called Black Friday-- most retail businesses will be in the 'Black' -- positive assets from now to year end due to people doing Holiday shopping.

I heard about the UK shopping. People fighting over products is ridiculous anywhere!
My kids were out all night last night from oh 7 or 8 PM until today around 9 AM, and told me it wasn't even busy! They even drove down towards Philly (over an hour away from their homes).
Our local news said that because some stores were open ON Thanksgiving that they were more crowded here on Thanksgiving than black Friday. The news said that there were lines waiting when they opened Thanksgiving. But there were no lines for black Friday at all.
So I guess people went out more on Thanksgiving.
But anyway where my kids went there were no fights over products or anything.

I have a friend who works retail in the UK, for a chain connected to Walmart. She didn't mention Black Friday by name, but had a lot to say about how horrendous her shift was yesterday, and she's sure not looking forward to the weekend. She works the digital photo area.
