The problem was resolved. Even if someone used your card, you are not liable.

So, no worries!

No worries? Well, I guess not if someone who's stolen her card doesn't proceed to steal her identity by using the information to apply for credit in her name. That is what identity theft is all about.

That glib response tells me you're lucky enough to never have had that happen to you.

You use a Home Depot card? Have they notified you about what they want you to do? Just monitor your account, replace the card, etc?

We used our Discover Card there a few times. I watch our Discover account daily anyway, but they put a banner on their homepage last week or the week before saying that, for right now, just monitor, don't request new cards.

So, for right now, I'm going to just keep watching our Discover account.

Yes we have a Home Depot card. I don't think you can use it anywhere else except HD. No, they haven't notified me of anything. Maybe I should call them.

I just figured if I make sure all charges to it are from the store we use, we are most likely ok.

Re: ? about Home Depot security...

I received notification from them about the breach. The e-mail also said the issue had been taken care of and I too was offered the 1 year of credit monitoring.

I am also still under the one free year from both Target and Neiman Marcus and I don't know what ever happened with the breach at Michaels.

If you used your debit card at Home Depot, you most certainly could have worries if someone got ahold of you card and wipes out your account. Yes you will get the money back but it's not instant and could cause some real problems in the meantime.

I know there is a security problem at HD. We only use our Home Depot card there. We also only go to one store, so our card will be easy to monitor. If there are charges on our card from any other store, we would notice.

We don't have to worry, do we?

Maybe some day soon the United States will change over to the more secure "chip" type of cards which offer much more security than the antiquated "magnetic stripe" cards. Much of the rest of the world is already using this much more secure form of technology for using cards instead of cash and/or checks.

Everyone that has "any type of magnetic stripe card" should look at them every single day to make sure that only the things they have used them for show up on the card. I don't like the word "worry" for anything, but I do concern myself with things that can be stolen via electronic technology.

I see the "chip cards" as the answer now and hopefully for my years down the road.

Re: ? about Home Depot security...

It seems like there is a new breach every week.

I've put text alerts on all of my cards so whenever there is a purchase, I get a text. I know that won't solve everything, but it helps. That won't stop anybody from using my info to open up accounts though.

Right after that happened my husband was planning to go there. I emailed him and mentioned he might want to use cash. He went to Lowe's instead. ha!

Anyway I'd probably monitor it closely, even still.

My AmEx card was hacked less than a year ago. AmEx called ME to straighten everything out.

When I went to apply for a mortgage, it turned out someone had used my SS # in FLA to get their own mortgage.
It was flagged and never went through.

Re: ? about Home Depot security...

My VISA was just cancelled two days ago (and declined when I went out to dinner with friends) bc while I was in class, the credit union fraud department noticed there were a lot of tiny off the wall charges in pending transactions which they said is a tipoff your card has been breached so they cancelled my card. I'd just paid my electric bill that morning and it went thru. New one reissued and I was told to watch it for a few days to see if the pending charges transfer to the card or disappear.

They said mine is the result of the Target breach and I said that was over a year ago but they told me that the Target database that was compromised contained over 9 million charge card numbers so this kind of thing can go on for years before it goes away. As for now, I at least know that VISA number is dead and can't accept charges cuz it wouldn't allow me to pay for my meal that night.

So just keep a watch on your card. It may or may not be affected or it might take a while for the crooks to find or get to your number and as long as you keep a watch over it, you'd not be responsible for its use for charges you didn't make.
