Someone stated that it's usually over and the roads are plowed in a day or two.
We have a well and a if we lose power we cannot take a shower or flush the toilet.
A few years ago we bought a whole house generator(propane). If the power goes, it automatically kicks in. It keeps the freezers going and we can get a shower. We have lost power for several days,if we can get out to the main road.
We live back in the woods and need to be able to function.
People who have lived in the city and do not have a well do not understand not being able to flush the toilet.
Our stove is gas. It has an electronic ignition, but we can light the burners the old fashioned way-like my mom did.
By the way we like living the way we do. Just have to be ready for it.
We also have two boxes that we clean out and renew at the beginning of winter-one is a "flu" box and the other is a power outage box.
