Your opinion please

A lawyer friend (his wife and daughter took piano from me for years) offered advice to us when we were going through an IRS problem. It was all over the phone. We did get it resolved, thanks to his help. I asked him how much we owed him, but he kept side-stepping it, saying that due to my teaching his family, we didn't owe him anything. Well, you know I must do something for him. I would like to get your opinion on what I should do and how much money. Thought of a gift card, but wondered how much to spend. Thanks for your help.
