Re: Your FAVORITE Or WORST Job And Why?

@SloopJohnB,

Wow, you must have to be a special kind of person with calm nerves to do that. I would think it would be very stressful.

I could see myself saying oh no everytime I heard about something bad and had to dispatch officers and hope it all came out ok. That is so good that you love it!

Before I became a teacher, I had many PT jobs while in college. One of my favorites was a switchboard operator for H&R Block.  Of  course, it was only from January through April.  My hours were 12:00 pm-5:00 pm, Monday-Friday.  Gave me time to attend my morning classes, eat an earl lunch and then go into work.

Another of my favorites was a Kindergarten "teacher" in a daycare center.  I went in from 3;00 pm to 6:00 pm Monday-Friday.  Still had time to attend classes, go to my grandmother's house, who lived close to work (she would feed meSmiley Happy) and make it to work.

These two jobs were perfect for a college student.  I had time in the evenings to complete my homework and study. Being off on the weekends also gave me time to study.

@Pandalady Welcome!🄰 How impressive! You had two jobs you really enjoyed, and then became a teacher! I have written several times today about how much PRAISE and RESPECT I have for teachers, so I am including you!😁

THANK you SO much for caring to share your work story this evening!šŸ¤—

@on the bay  Thank you. Heart  Yes, it is one of those jobs that you either love it or not.  Not much in between.  Plus the fact that it is a 24/7 position, not everyone cares to work weekends, holidays and midnight shifts.  Also having to pull a double shift cause your relief called out sick and then having to double back with not much sleep.  But I really do enjoy the work.

I would give everything I own just to have you back again.......David Gates of Bread

My worst job was right after high school graduation.  I need to save money for when I entered college in the fall, so in the summer months I took a job at a newly opened Matel Toy Company.  I didn't care what the job was and they were hiring like crazy.  I had a job running the 'glue' machine that put a picture label of a toy truck on the box it was shipped in.  There was slippery, wet glue on the floor everywhere you stepped.  Needless to say, that job only lasted July and August, (thankfully)  and then in September I was enrolled in college.

Best job was the one I retired from after 28 years; teaching special education.  It was gratifying and rewarding, and I loved every minute of it.

@ciao_bella Welcome!🄰  Awwwwwww! Some jobs can be a "sticky" situation.😁 Woo Hoo, college to the rescue!😊 It is so comforting to read of how much you LOVEDā¤ teaching special education! I can relate to that on a personal level, and have the UTMOST respect for your 28 years of dedication! The profession needs SO many more like you, and another poster who works with special needs children!😊

Re: Your FAVORITE Or WORST Job And Why?

I worked in a profession I didn't like for forty-six years. When I was 19 I had just spent two semesters in college taking Intro to linguistics, communications 101 etc. But I was clueless about what I wanted to do. Back then (1970),  I really just wanted to be a wealthy socialite wife of a doctor or CEO. But alas. šŸ˜… Also a liberal arts degree was considered iffy, as far as getting jobs. So I let my mother talk me into going to nursing school. My talents and true love at that time were in the arts-singing, English lit, communication and writing. Least skilled in and not interested in math and science. Yeah. I spent most of my career job hopping. Luckily I made an excellent wage at every job. My last ten years or so were in the hospice field, which I liked more than anything else I had done. The ability to help ease suffering for my dying patients and to emotionally support their families was special. That said, you can imagine the relief I felt the day I retired in 2018.
These past six years have been the best of my life.
Now at 72, I am still indulging my love of vocal performance in a big acappella show chorus. And reading. And stewarding my little free library. The things I might have done for a career I'm now doing as hobbies 🄰

@RetRN Welcome!🄰  šŸ‘šŸ‘šŸ‘ Congratulations on 40 years as an RN!ā¤ That is often a THANKLESS profession, with patients becoming more and more demanding. It takes a special person to work in Oncology, so that tells me the kind of caring and compassionate person you are!😊
