My first job right after high school was working at a car wash that still had full service gas pumps.  It was a time of sidewalls and tires were scrubbed with a whitening agent before going into the wash.  Went home dead dog tired every single day.  I was the youngest and the only girl.  I had a whole bunch of big brothers that I always wanted growing up.  I am still in contact with some of them today.  I loved it.

@DrakesMomma Welcome!🄰  When I began reading your post I thought oh no, until I read the special ending!😁

How WONDERFUL it is that you have fond memories of working at a gas station, and had "adopted" brothers with whom you enjoyed working!šŸ’

THANK you SO much for caring to share your special job experience today!šŸ¤—

Re: Your FAVORITE Or WORST Job And Why?

My worst job was right after high school graduation.  I need to save money for when I entered college in the fall, so in the summer months I took a job at a newly opened Matel Toy Company.  I didn't care what the job was and they were hiring like crazy.  I had a job running the 'glue' machine that put a picture label of a toy truck on the box it was shipped in.  There was slippery, wet glue on the floor everywhere you stepped.  Needless to say, that job only lasted July and August, (thankfully)  and then in September I was enrolled in college.

Best job was the one I retired from after 28 years; teaching special education.  It was gratifying and rewarding, and I loved every minute of it.

My favorite job was working at an Air Force Base with a squadron of helicopter pilots.  This was a training and rescue squadron during the end of the Vietman era.  The pilots were so much fun.  The lower enlisted, not so much.  There were some real trouble makers.  Some were the HiFi murderers.  Incidentally, there's a book about that and I knew just about everyone mentioned in the book except the victims.

My least favorite was working in HR for a little hitler type.  He ruled through intimidation.  He played extreme favoritism and was actually physically abusive to me a couple of times.  But he had so much power that there was nobody to complain to.  He retired in 1997 and I still hate him, it was that bad.

@Scooby Doo,

That is incredible! Really apart of so much history. It must have been so scary to know you knew or at least had met these murderers.

I have worked in 4 different agencies for the state of MD for 51 years...the best job is the one I have now. While it can be draining at times, I love it and the main reason I won't retire...what am I going to do all day?? I'm in week one of my vacation and already bored.  And I worked hard for my Masters so not ready to let it go...

The worse job I had was before I got college degrees.  I worked in an agency as clerical staff and was eaten alive by a female supervisor.  I was 20 years old and had not yet found my fight back voice.  I stayed the longest (one year) of all the folks she went through.  I was back on the transfer list to move to another agency 8 weeks after I started...

@bmorechick Welcome!🄰 You are the first person to say they LOVEā¤ their job, and although they are able to retire, they are just not ready! I know you have some GREAT advice you would give your young self about how to deal with a difficult boss!😊 Those personality types are really cowards, are and prey on the young! I am CERTAIN you would have a few choice words today.😁

    My favorite job was teaching.  My Master's degree is in reading.  I loved working with little kids and the other teachers in my district.  It was a very rewarding career.  I taught for 22years.
    Prior to teaching, I worked as a graphic artist.  I enjoyed that as well, but after 13 years, I wanted a change and teaching was the best choice.
    The worst job was the 6 months before I went to college.  I was just out of high school ....and truthfully very immature and not ready to go at that time.  So...took a job as a shampoo girl for a local beauty shop.  That was an eye opener...  But at that time, I needed a job and some income.  By January I was enrolled in college.

@Mombo1 You have had an interesting, and EXCITING career!😊 I have nothing but the HIGHEST praise for teachers today!ā¤ā¤ The job is often THANKLESS, with some hostile parents, and administrations that do not always support their teachers! Thankfully, you did not have to work at the salon for very long, but gained the work experience!😊

@RetRN,

I admire and wonder how someone can be a nurse for so long and I wish I could hear all the reasons you felt as you did about each unit.

One of my daughter's was a nurse for 10 years. I just can't imagine doing all the hard things, both physically and emotionally and mentally, not just with patients, but managers, staff, all the red tape and politics.

I guess oncology could be depressing?

Re: Your FAVORITE Or WORST Job And Why?

My Worst Job:  5 summers from 11 th grade to beginning of senior year in college.  It paid well and covered my college tuition at the time so I graduated debt-free in 1966.

Both my parent worked at the chemical company: dad in plant department, momin metals lab, me in textile lab.  I was " watched " by everybody as it was in a small community and at the company, everybody knew my parents.

I was referred to as " Summer Help " which was derogatory as in they never do any real work.  I probably worked harder than most folks there.

Day 1 and every day thereafter, I would walk into the main large lab, walk to the huge calendar on the wall and ceremoniously put a very large red "X" through the day...even though it was only 8:30 AM !  Every summer for 5 years !

Funny thing, it was an event that occurred there while my boss was on vacation that landed me an outstanding job at graduation and a place on the management fast track, even though I was a French major.  The example I gave to the recruiter on campus was a demonstration of leadership and initiative.

A large Southern-based textile client was questioning a water repellancy claim before signing a contract.  I volunteered to rerun the test that evening and call in the result after the fabric stayed in the conditioning lab overnite.  We got the contract.

That first corporate job led to an executive position ultimately at the parent company and training subsidiaries how to do long range force planning.  Which enabled me to leave with a "downsizing" financial package and starting my own management skill training consulting business.

This led to an adjunct professorship at my college concentrating on leadership and communication skills.  Next and last stop: career consulting partnership with one of the largest national firms hired by companies to provide career search skills for downsized folks.  My former company was one of their largest clients...I am sure they were happy to see me again, lol !

When a major railroad was in a tug of war between two other larger railroads, I conducted a 3-day workshop for their executive committee to demonstrate how there folks would go through the process.  We won the contract and it lasted for three years until the company was closed.

Yes I hated that original 5-summer job but it lead to a lifetime of opportunities in paths that I had never even considered  !!!

Oh yes, best of all, that's where I met DH 57 years ago the first month on the job !!!

We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.

Re: Your FAVORITE Or WORST Job And Why?

I worked a total of 51 years.  They were all either government or corporate level jobs.

There was no worst or best .... all good jobs ... learned a lot, they provided the experience needed to move on to higher levels.

I was at my last job 19 years.
