You start seeing Halloween candy in your local grocery store.  This happened to me this morning.    Fill in your own: you know summer is over when.....

when I see the first yellow leaf on a tree.  We have several in our woods that are turning already.

When our maples show the first splashes of orange..roll on fall..

I always feel summer is over when the children return to school.  I know as a child that was when I felt summer leave and since I worked in a school system as an adult I still felt that way.  I am retired  and every day is a holiday but seeing the kids going back to school  continues to signal the end of summer for me.

It's not over for me until the end of September. And the official end of summer is September 22nd. I can't stand the push for the end of seasons, other than winter.

It's the worst summer of my life so I don't care when it's over.
