A firend of mine has a 65 foot yacht and that is the biggest privately owned boat I have been on - a mini!

Hey, good for them.    Well, a yacht can certainly give people privacy and allow them to decompress from a demanding business and career.

Personally, I find being out on the water (or next to it) to be very soothing.

Keep in mind that whenever a wealthy person buys something extravagant, many people get a paycheck.  It might be in the manufacture of the extravagance, or crew, or maintenance ... or whatever.

Many years ago, Aaron Spelling, the mega TV producer, justified his mansion.  He said he never goes anywhere because he is constantly working and can't make time for even a short vacation, so he has a big home which is his "vacation".   He loved his home and the fact that he could enjoy it every day.

IMO, more jobs are created with "things" than if the cash was just sitting in a mutual fund.

JMO, of course.

Demanding career?  I'll tell you who has demanding careers.  Our health care workers, police officers, in short all the people working their behinds off to keep the public safe and not making much money.  The yacht owners got their wealth by exploiting people, cheating them out of their retirement savings and other noble acts.  I don't call playing golf all day long a challenging career either, neither is kicking a ball for a living.  Then these actors - way over paid.  Give me a break!

I would have zero interest in owning a yacht. I'd rather buy an innovative, promising corporation.....or fund cancer research or maybe build a few thousand luxury cat rescue organizations.

These yacht owners do not care about other people or making the world a better place.  They couldn't care less about the environment, wildlife, or pets.  They funded their yachts by exploiting other people.  Sure they donate to "worthy causes".  But it's not to help anybody or anything.

Those people can afford yachts because they pay so little or nothing in taxes.

Well, a person needs different kinds of yachts for different reasons, so that makes total sense.  Let's see, one for the Pacific, one for the Atlantic, one for Lake Superior, one for small parties, one for big parties, etc.  "Honey, let's take the small yacht today."

...and you wouldn't want a small yacht.  Better not to have one at all because that would be so humiliating.

I guess Green doesn't apply to any of them?

This news is late to the party, but I just heard on CNN that the Italians have seized this ship and think they've proven it belongs to Valdemir Putin.  The length wasn't listed but it's huge and includes gold toilet paper holders and a dining table that seats 20.

I don't care what these things cost, as long as the owenrs aren't out preaching to me to save the earth by not using zip lock bags or something equally stupid.

The luxury yacht is moored in the port of Marina di Carrara off the west coast of Italy, meaning it could be vulnerable to EU sanctions if it is confirmed to belong to Putin.

I saw Putin's yacht in Croatia last September.   He wasn't there but wealthy Russians often use it and are often in that area.  Lebron James's yacht was moored at the same time.
