Re: Xfinity Comcast was hacked

The past two days when I have tried to watch something on MAX I have had to go online and enter a code that appears on my television. I was going to call them to see what was going on.

@Mindy D   @Enufstuff   Mindy:  Thank you for posting this.  I usually pay Comcast over the phone but occassionally online when they changed the many decades phone number from 800 COMCAST to the new one to pay bills:  1-800-934-6489.

If the new number balks I either haang up and re-dial or yell "pay my bill" a few times to get to the proper prompt.

NEVER do I let them them store the card information that I use to pay them.

Hope this helps.

I signed in online and changed my password for my account and pray thaat there will not be any problems.  I skipped two factor authentication.  That can causemoree problems for me; I've learned that the hard way.

Re: Xfinity Comcast was hacked

I haven't received any notification about this but last week was prompted to change the passwords on my accounts.  This is one reason why I have different cell phone service, different cable/internet service, and different land line service.  The discount of having all eggs in one basket isnt worth it for me.  We are so dependent on these things in today's world that if one goes out at least I only have to deal with one tragedy at a time but that's just me.  I can't imagine how frustrating it would be to lose all three services at the same time, if it ever came to that.

The threat that the hackers might get into your Xfinity account or steal credit card info is only the tip of the iceberg.  Generally speaking, hackers who get personal info such as names, addresses and SS digits as apparently in this case, will use that info to take out loans, apply for credit cards, get a driver license etc. all in your name and without your knowledge.  That is probably why Xfinity suggests getting identity theft monitoring from one of the Big 3.

My Comcast bill is automatically billed to my VISA CC. This is great because I end up getting a 1.5% rebate back on it every month.

Re: Xfinity Comcast was hacked

In addition to identity theft monitoring as I discussed above, Xfinity says to change your password for other accounts for which you used the same username and password as for your hacked Xfinity account.  For example, if you used your now old Xfinity username and password (the hacked ones) as your username and password for, say, your online banking account, Amazon.com, QVC.com, Walmart.com, Verizon.com and so on, Xfinity says to change your username and/or password on those accounts too.  The hackers stole usernames with matching passwords.  Knowing that many people use the same username and password for multiple accounts, the hackers will just run a program that will try all those username and password pairings on, say, Amazon.com, until one of them invariably works.  FYI.

Is there a reason these multi multi BILLION $ companies can't keep their customer's accounts safe?  They can and should give us the security they can well afford.
