I received a call last night that my former BIL (now remarried) wants to have a fundraiser for his sister who is undergoing treatment for metastatic ovarian cancer (it's in her ovaries, liver and other places now). He is in his 80s, she is in her late 70s and married. Apparently, Medicare isn't covering the cost of the treatment in full. My niece, who is his stepdaughter and who remains close to him nearly 15 years after her mother died, is the one who called me. I see my BIL's sister maybe once each year, if that. She is a nice woman, but when my mother died, no one from his huge (100+ members) family gave one cent to the fund we had established in her name at a local church.
What would you do? How much would you give? Thanks.
