Re: Would you complain about this?

I see my post got deleted. Interesting. Why? It did not break any rules of community standards. So I guess I will email the moderators and ask them why. Apparently on this forum, only people who post things that side with other posters can have their say, everyone else, go away. No one answered my question about calling the police either. I still ask how noise during the day is a police matter.

Macy, I did not see your response but if you scroll up to mine,I said the same (#314)...It's not and the O.P came back to reiterate that point..

Re: Would you complain about this?

Ford,

It may seem foolish to some, but this "annoyance" you've had to live with for over two months must be almost unbearable by now. However, when you called the police, it was a good thing that you were able to speak with a Lieutenant. That counts for something. (When my daughter was being stalked, she didn't get to speak with a Lieutenant until 4 months down the road.)

I wish you the best outcome possible - soonest - and will keep you in my prayers.

yes, she does now seem to be backing off and saying the police can't do anything. I just take objection to all the strangers on this thread who virtually crucified her neighbor coming up with all kinds of scenarios without even knowing what is really going on. It's pretty unfair to label her as mentally ill because she wears a tool belt.

ITA..

As far as O.P she actually spoke to the police so it is more clear now...She is seeking an alternate route if it doesn't subside..

I live in Chicago and if my neighbors called for all the incessant noise our cops would be so tied up in this building alone...

I agree with you, sfnative. Perhaps those (few, thankfully) who are against phoning the non-emergency police for advice have never been in such a position, feeling threatened, being alone and dealing with illness and pain, and having their peace of mind and the peace in their home loudly disturbed for 2 months or more. Daily. For hours. Hammering that was so violent it actually moves the mirror on the wall.

Please, everyone -- a little empathy goes a long way. And the non-emergency police number is there for things of this nature, to find out what our options are.

I didn't wait to call the police. I called them last night, not to come here, but to understand just what they could do about it if she starts again today and I were to call them.

The Lieutenant I spoke to told me all he can do is send one or two officers over here, they will knock on her door, tell her they have received complaints, and ask her to please try to be more considerate of her neighbors. They will not enter her apartment, they will just leave. Period. What she is doing is not considered a crime, but a disturbance here in a privately owned building. It is up to the ownership of this building to see if she is in violation of her lease, and to follow up if she doesn't conform to the lease's noise regulations.

He also said that either the tenants or management can file a complaint with the court which will mean we will have to appear before a judge for a hearing and proofs (and perhaps attorneys) will have to be involved. He thinks her behavior is dementia, so there might have to be physician reports as well. In other words we would, in effect, be suing her. Management is obviously not going to do this, and I am not going to do it either. I don't have the money, nor the physical/emotional strength.

I am writing to the owners today to advise them that I want to be moved to a different apartment if she is not going to be stopped or evicted, and if the list is full I should be put at the top of it because of my own excellent record as a tenant. Since the manager told me she was washing her hands of it and to call the police, I don't feel I am overstepping her authority. As for the other neighbors affected by this, they can do whatever they feel is required for their peace of mind. I know one of them has already moved her bedroom around. My daughters have suggested to me that they move my bedroom into the living room, which would be further from her apartment and I might not be as vulnerable to the noise. In the meantime, I am going to look for other places to live which will be difficult to find in the rental range that exists here.

Since this thread has become unbelievably long and I'm afraid it may turn negative, I am going to try not to post anymore unless something really significant happens. I am very aware of the fact that this is upsetting for some of you, and I sincerely apologize for that.

All things end, and this will too. It is very minor compared to what's happening in the world, and seems foolish when looked at through that scope. I don't know what else to say, except to thank you all for your advice and concern.{#emotions_dlg.wub}

Kudos to you, (((Ford))), for following up and getting clarity from phoning the non-emergency police number. Many of us are aware of all the challenges you've been facing in the past few years, and this was venturing toward the "straw that broke the camel's back" taken with that cumulative knowledge. I think everyone means well, but some posters aren't aware and are probably seeing this as a standalone situation, without knowing the mitigating circumstances. Letting this thread go is probably a good idea -- perhaps you can follow up with any progress over in the "Among Friends" forum.

Take care.{#emotions_dlg.wub}

Macy: Something certainly appears off with this woman's state of mind if she is banging on the walls for hours on end month after month. Do you think this is normal behavior?

Re: Would you complain about this?

everyone has challenges DBD. EVeryone. but that still is no excuse to mercilessly talk about a person you don't know in such harsh terms. The OP had options as I pointed out by having her daughter, another neighbor, manager, whoever, walk over to the apartment and tell this woman that her noise is shaking her mirror. She says its been going on for two months yet did nothing?

You all fed into this and further made it worse IMO. If the poster was my mother and had this much stress in her life, I would ask her to move in with me or put her in assisted living, not have her tell anonymous posters about all her stresses and ask them for help. Her post asked "what would you do?" so she was asking strangers what she should do.

And as for deleting my post, just because it did not give the OP the support the rest of the posters did, did not mean it should be deleted. That is censorship. Everyone should be allowed to have their say good or bad if it doesn't violate the rules. And mine didn't.

Re: Would you complain about this?

Macy you're mercilessly talking about the OP yet you are so worried about some tool-belt wearing person who isn't even reading here. She's making noise all hours of the day yet you seem to think that is perfectly OK. interesting. And FYI, it may not be a "crime" to make noise, but it wasn't wrong of anyone to give advice to Ford about having the police check on the woman to see what was going on.
