Re: Would you be happy with this gift? Help!

I would not be happy with a generic gift like that. Who doesn't already have too many mugs and tumblers in their kitchen cabinet? Most adults have enough "stuff" already. When I get "stuff" that I don't need or want, it goes right into the Goodwill box.

I've also been involved in those little games for distributing gifts...Sue takes Mary's gift. Mary takes Sally's gift, etc., and poor Kathy at the end of the line ends up with a bunch of "stuff" that no one else wants. Everyone laughs, but ultimately, no one is happy. Personally, I would just bow out of that gift exchange.

I agree that it would have been better to draw names. At least then, you could have purchased something personal for someone. Too late for this year now, but I would speak up about next year's exchange immediately after Christmas.

Re: Would you be happy with this gift? Help!

@Drythe

You said it:  Did the Grinch get me, or is it just too D much consumerism?

Both I guess for me.  I am just sick of dealing with other people's stuff I guess.  I just have hauled and boxed up mountains of it.  Then there are those gifts like people mention here that you have a ton of. . . and feel bad about getting rid of.

I don't know why in this day and age we always have to "gift" especially for people we don't really know well.  I wish they would ask for a $20 donation--$10 to a charity and $10 to some snacks for the party.

I also wish they would have a holiday in July donation drive too.  You are besieged with charity activities and if you work it can get VERY expensive if you have to go to a lot of meetings of work where there are multiple offices and departments asking for donations.  I feel sorry for people who don't have a lot of money, are trying to get things for their kids, and are asked to pony up several times a week.  It is out of hand.

Yes I support charity drives whole heartedly, but it's hard when they all come at once.

Re: Would you be happy with this gift? Help!

Thank you all for your responses.  I really appreciate it.  I did go ahead an get the Tervis mugs/cups.  There were enough of you that said it was a good gift.

For the people that don't need a mug for coffee, I would think you would drink hot tea or cocoa?

Anyway, if no one wants them, I'll take them.  I tend to buy stuff I like.

If you notice, for everyone that had a great idea, some people said they didn't want that.

As far as candles, I buy a lot when they are on sale.  Throws, we own 7 between the two of us.  Lottery tickets are fun, but if you don't win anything you have scrap paper left for a gift.  See what I mean?

Anyway, thank you for all your suggestions.  Next year I hope we draw names, but I wasn't really in charge.

I hope you all have a Merry Christmas!

Re: Would you be happy with this gift? Help!

My grandson informed me that the mugs make excellent ice cream bowls in the summer!

They are also very good for keeping soup warm!  People should be able to find good uses for them.  I have many and use them daily!

@mima, I think you chose wisely.

I received a Tervis last Christmas and I love it.  It's good for hot or cold beverages.  I'm a water drinker and must fill up my Tervis 5 or more times a day and it goes with me.  A few ice cubes and my water is nice and cold rather than drink from a warm bottle.

@Zhills Wow, great ideas!  I own them and never thought of the mugs for ice cream and soup.

I make a dairy free icecream for myself in my vitamix everyday and this is a fantastic idea!  I'm going to put one in the fridge each morning so I'll have a cold cup for my icecream.

Love the soup idea too!

Thank you so much!

@Sooner  I completely understand.    I'm all for purging and limiting tchotckes, but it's CHRISTMAS.    It's a GIFT.   And in the type of exchange the OP describes, it's probably the kind we call "dirty Santa" people get to choose & swap gifts around until they settle on something they want.    Sure you can use a 2017 calendar??   And throws & blankets wear out after a while, get rid of the old, make room for the new.

The problem being, the "old" ones are the ones I love and picked out for me for color, comfort, size, etc. etc.  Do I spend my life getting rid of my stuff for other people's stuff?

what I hear lots of us saying is there are these lists of "stuff" we all have and don't want more of that are deemed gifts anyone would want. Maybe in some circles, just a party with no gifts is the sensible answer.  Gift you time, warmth, conpanionship, and care for others.  Just be with people and enjoy the day, celebrate the season, and not have to drag a bunch of stuff with you that people don't want or need and you have agnoized over.

Re: Would you be happy with this gift? Help!

I would like it.

What I wouldn't  like is a gift card. Actually I hate, dispise gift cards. In a recent survey, only 27% of people like gift cards. All they are is cash with strings attached; bossy cards.
