Many years ago after I graduated from High School and didn't know if I wanted to go to college, I worked full time and lived at home.  May parents charged me a nominal amount for rent.  After 2 years I decided I wanted to go to college.  They handed me back all the rent money I had paid them.

The rent money was requested from them so I would understand that being an adult came with responsibilites.

and other posters.................

My parents also charged me a small rent fee when I turned 18.

You know, for the lesson value....

I was confident my dad would give it back to me when I got married at 20...

He bought a toilet with it for his house in the woods.

LOLOL

@RespectLife  That is so funny. Can't stop laughing. At least it was enough to buy a toilet.

It depends on the situation.  If you need help paying for the extra utilities, food,

  1. Water.  Charge them rent.  My nephew, his wife and child were with us for 7 years.  They moved out yesterday.  We didn't chat them rent because they were deep in debt and they needed to get free of that.  Also both needed dependable cars for their jobs. we didn't charge rent but she did all the house cleaning and cooking.  We didn't a weekly cleaning lady.  My nephew took care of shampooing the carpets. Washing the walls and windows when needed so we didn't need a cleaning service coming in three times a year.  They also bought groceries for the house.  We probably went 50-50 on groceries.

@smoochy   I'm so sorry for your loss.  Has to be one of the hardest things ever. Thinking of you with an anniversary coming up.  Very sad indeed.

@Jo1313   Was your dish set blue and white? or heavily Christmas/winter themed?

I bet it's gorgeous! Here's a photo off the internet: I especially like the matching drinking glasses.

If one of my children came back to live with us, they would certainly have some type of reason  to do that. Either financially or emotionally, so no I would never charge them rent. I just couldn't imagine talking money from my child.
