Oh this is a good one and one I have insight on.

Ambition, drive, good education and willing to work slowly up the ladder. Willing to move and be flexible with your job/business. Continue learning doing courses/weekend studying which means sacrifices on family time. I also think support/help on both personal and business sides. Having good, hardworking people around you and taking on work which may not be exciting but can lead to more success.

Once success is being achieved be appreciative and be willing to share your knowledge and time While being professional be compassionate and know the people around you and give them the same opportunities. Take risks and be optimistic, the person I know won an award at school for being a happy child and continues to be a happy adult even when live throws curve balls.

Kissing up to the right people. Success for many in the workplace has disappeared except for the very few no matter how hard you work.
