I didn't know yesterday's snow storm had a name until I got up this morning. Then I read that The Weather Channel (which I never watch) decided to name it Kenan. Who gave them permission?
Can people who use Accuweather or the National Weather Service name it something else if they want to?

I always watch the Weather Channel and as I understand it the national weather service or whoever names the storm, not the WC. Just like hurricanes get names,

The Weather Channel has been naming winter storms for awhile now. Not sure when they started doing it but I believe if the storm meets certain criteria it gets named, like hurricanes. We got to meet Kenan up close and personal in RI. I have to say I was impressed, 22 inches of snow and 60 mph winds later

They have been naming the storms since the 2012-2013 season. Here's their latest list,
I don't know if other stations name theirs at all or use the weather channel names!

I saw a disclaimer a few years ago. The names are assigned by the Weather Channel which of course is not a part of the National Weather Service. The NWS names hurricanes but not winter storms.
I am glad for those affected that the storm has passed. I hope everyone fared well. Please let us know how it affected your area.

Thanks everyone. So it's a highly successful publicity effort by The Weather Channel. Very clever.
I got an e-mail from Bank of America this morning about availability of services during Winter Storm Kenan. That's how I heard it.

Winter storms are named by The Weather Channel for systems meeting strict criteria. There were 24 named storms last winter, including two in October.

It's nice of them to honor Kenan Thompson this way.
