There's a gas station near me where the mechanic puts out food in the adjacent alley for the neighborhood birds. I like to get a coffee and then park there to watch the action.

I guess he was too busy today, and the geese, who always get first dibs, weren't happy. A group of about six waddled over to the pumps and wouldn't move until he put out the food.

The geese eat first, then crows, then sparrows. It seems they intentionally leave enough so everybody gets something to eat.

They sound like the seagulls at Oracle Park in San Francisco where the Giants play.  They begin to congregate near the end of every game, ready to descend when the last out is recorded.  And do they get upset when the game goes into extra innings? - you'd better believe it.  They can even get aggressive with the fans.

That's why it's called the "pecking order". Nobody eats until the geese get their fill first!
