Why don't they call "dieting" the "hunger games" ?

[ Edited ]

I think I'll go to my grave never figuring out, why some of us do it so easily, and the rest of us have such a struggle. Some days it's a breeze and other days, it's a voracious hungry tiger!!

I'm adding: it's time for compassion and acceptance. New goal, eat healthy, don't overdue, what is just is what is. I accept my body is limited so half of that fight is over, now I can eat for good health. That's a realistic goal for myself. I can still keep a handle on it, but I don't have to feel bad, if I can't be physically what I was when younger. What a load off that is!!! Acceptance of what really is.

@qualitygal, what a play on words and so essentially true!  It's the biggest game in town.  And most of us that play it have been doing so most of our adult lives, lol.  Sometimes we win it but it usually is only temporary.  Could it be that some are meant to be a little over the top, like it or not.

It reminds me of that theory that was floating around years ago that we all have a set point bd no matter what you do, your body/appetite leads you back to it.  It might be 6 months...it might be 6 years but that number on the scale always comes back to haunt you.

Now why my font color changed up above, I have no idea.  Hmmmmm.

If you are starving, you're not eating enough.  You have it right.  Don't overdo and listen to your body.  That's the secret and always has been.  Your body will tell you what it needs.  Even that treat every once in while.  Smiley Happy

I say this with all respect but if I listened to my body I would be eating french fries and cake all day long.

I have dieted all of my life and at this point my metabolism is shot.....I probably cannot eat more than 1000 calories otherwise I gain weight.  Lately, I was put on medication that is a known drug that causes weight gain. I am eating anywhere from 800 to 1000 calories just to break even and not gain. There are days I think the hunger games adequately describe a life long struggle to stay at a healthy weight for my height. BTW, my cardiologist knows I am not eating much and he said better that than gaining. So much for "starving."

To clarify, listen to your body not your cravings.

When you start on a cleaner eating program, those cravings will diminish as the addictions (sugar, fat, etc) go away. And I promise they will.

After you get over that hurdle (and it is a big one), it is much easier to hear your body and determine when you are actually hungry and what food your body really needs each day.

I have been thin all of my life except after I gave birth to my children. Never have I not been interested in eating sugar and fat. I am most of the time hungry and have learned to live with it. However, I have read that once the brain is changed to crave sugar and fat ...it always will. Sugar is more addictive than cocaine.

My motto too but I add ice cream to my cake.  Some days I am more hungry than others so I just adjust but never ever miss a day of exercise so I can eat something great each day.

I call it eating healthy but not dieting.  Sore muscles every day is a whole other topic.

I find that drinking plenty of cold water helps stave off hunger pangs, and keeps me well-hydrated.  Best of luck to you!

It depends on what the 800 to 1000 calories are comprised of-  lower fat proteins are the best for filling you up. Avoid 'empty' calories, I start my day with a 30 gram protein shake (Premier protein shakes from Costco- they're on sale this month!! Woman Happy). A cardiologist is also not one to comment on weight control issues! My cardiologist last year advised  me with all kinds of cr*p about losing weight-  'just put the plate down' kind of things. Many are uneducated about dealing the metabolism of a person with weight issues, they think it's just black and white. And he was no skinny either!!  In addition, he went by an over 200  cholersterol reading from several months prior to determine a need for statins- meanwhile I ahd been exercising(cardio & resistance)  and losing weight since that reading. He questioned what kind of benefit a  200+ lb person I could be getting from exercising!!  My next reading a few weeks later showed  my cholersterol was way down, under 170.  Yes, a new cardiologist for me! And my weight continues to reduce slowly, we're all a work in progress.

Diet and exercise, aka:  Deprivation and torture.
