Re: Why does QVC target the older consumer .....

If I had to do it all over again, I would've gone to a public university, been out of debt in maybe 3-5 years and probably already had my house almost paid off. *sigh* Oh, well.

Not every graduate walks right into a high paying job. Not every graduate has a degree in an area that has a high hiring rate.

And I also agree that there a good colleges for far less, like state colleges.

That's true. When I rented a house when I first started teaching, it was only $375 a month. Again, it's just about choices. If you want to live in a high-cost area, go for it. You'll have a harder time getting out of debt, though, if you don't have a job or have a low-paying job.

No, it's not just about choices. Some people stay in a certain area because that's where their family is, or because that's where the job they want is. You can teach anywhere, there are plenty of other jobs which are not available anywhere.

Maybe 5 years ago, the cost of a small apt in the Bay Area was $2000 a month. I assume it's gone up. Houses probably start at one million.

Actually it is about choices. If you choose a job that is only available in high-cost areas, that's your choice. You've decided that you're going to a high-cost college to get a swanky degree and hopefully a high-paying job. That's the risk you're taking.

I chose a private university where I racked up $63K in debt (and more in credit card debt, I might add). I chose to move to a low-cost area, got a job that pays well in that low-cost area and worked my butt off to pay off my debt.

No one is holding a gun to your head making you live around family or take a certain job or live in a certain area. It's a choice.

If someone stays in an expensive area where there family happens to live that is their choice. Their families may have been able to thrive in that expensive area, but real estate costs have skyrocketed in major cities and sometimes it's just plain stupid to think you can afford to live where your parents live unless you want to live down their basement.

If someone chooses a profession and limits themselves to a few towns, because that's where they want to live, again that's their choice.

Nobody is forcing them to stay close to home.

My son went for an EE degree and job prospects were good when he went in. There was a long hiring freeze when he graduated. It took him 18 months to get an EE job. It was covered extensively in the media back then (last admin).

Only if you make bad choices, it's about choices. Staying in your area would probably not do a lot of people any good if they're looking for the job they studied for.

That's what's good for some professions, like teaching or nursing. You can live anywhere. Not so if you want to be a mover in other fields, like the tech or bio-technology fields.

Your choice was to stay near your parents in a low-cost area. Others may eventually make more money than you ever will. It's getting the education and the start to do so.
