Why do they do this with movies?

Does anyone know the answer to this? Why do they release some movies in limited areas ONLY? I was SO looking forward to seeing The Place Beyond the Pines with Ryan Goslin, Bradley Cooper, and Eva Mendes this weekend. They even showed previews at our local theatre when we were there the past 3X, and now I find out it wont be showing here in our area. (I even wrote to the theatre and said are you having this movie this week? They wrote back and said no, but they might get it later. Well they never do, because they said they might get other movies that never came in). I don't understand why they do this! Especially with a cast as popular as the 2 guys in this movie. What a bummer.
