By definition, true jeans have a front fly, button or zip.

Other pants can have side zips or front zips.  There are certainly out there to buy.  Often they are more light weight or a dressier fabric.

That is a good question.  I actually think the zip front is the style of a true pair of jeans and it does make for easy on/off.  I do have pull ons also but those can be a challenge to get on at times, especially leggings.   I tend to wear tops that are looser so it doesn't add bulk for me, and I never tuck anything in, ever.

I only wear pull on pants.  Hate dealing with zippers and buttons regardless of where they are!!

Orginally jeans were for men only and only came in mens wear.  I know my first ever pair of jeans was when I was in junior high school and we had to go to the country mens store to buy them.  Also, at that time how would we have gotten them on and off?

I dont know when they started making jeans for women with the zipper facing a different way and designed for a womans body.  Most likely late 50's early 60's?

I wear mostly elastic waist (flexibelle's) nowdays so no zipper.  And I like that.  I would have NEVER wore elastic waist when I was young.

What I dont understand is the fake fly and non functioning button on pull on jeans.

I agree on a few points! 

I don't need belt loops either!  I haven't tucked in and belted since JR high!

They, along with the button and fly, DO show lumpy sometimes!

However, I no longer want to be bothered with a side zip.  Had those in the 60s.

Just like a Hollywood waist...no front pockets, no zip, no preten fly and pull on!!

KG had them last year and haven't seen them since.

I like a zipper and button closure. I won't wear pull on jeans. They never stay put and usually start drooping immediately. To each their own.

No matter how my jeans are made (even pull-on), I need belts loops for my belts to keep my jeans from sliding down. I don't have much of a rear-end or hips to keep things up around my waist. Belt loops please.

I only wear pull up jean leggings. My favorite are Spanx Jean-ish jeans. I also like Liverpool brand. I have lots of jeans but only one pair of zip up and never wear them.

I had a pair of black skinny pants with a side zip years ago and I loved them! Hollywood pants. 

Love a side zip!

No way would I buy any pair of pants with a side zipper.

Pants have front zippers or faux zippers because women demand them.  If I had a dime for all the posts I've seen here from women asking for front zippers, I'd be rich. I have jeans with and without and see no difference in fit.  IMO zippers are an inconvenience. I'd rather have pull-ons.  Since most people wear shirtails out, nobody sees the zipper area anyway.
