Re: Why did the Ebola thread close?

Thanks to Pitdakota, as well as many other people who've posted on this board, to not get overly "emotional"...but to just keep stating the facts. It can get through...sometimes. Not saying I was one of the ones who was overly worried, but I did have lots of concerns and questions about this disease.

I'm happy to say that many of your comments made an impact on me, and helped educate me.

Now.....I'm over all the hysteria, and when the nurse in Maine went for a bike ride..that was the turning point for me. She did nothing wrong, and people went overboard over her actions.

She won the support of the American Nurses Association, the American Association of Critical Care Nurses, the Association of Public Health Nurse Educators, the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology, the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America, the Infectious Disease Society of America, the HIV Medical Association, the Pediatric Infectious Disease Society, the American Hospital Association, and the American Medical Association. To name just a few. LOL!

Every single one of those organizations came out in support of her and took a stance against mandatory quarantine for returning health care workers.

Exactly. I remember your posts about this, pitdakota.

You did a great job of presenting important factual information on the various threads.

Hi Doobdoo! Thank you for the kind words. It got interesting at times didn't it? LOL

And thank you for your always insightful and well thought out posts as well. {#emotions_dlg.wub}

The constant fault finding that has no purpose is tiresome and excruciatingly boring. Webbie may tire of it, I do and I'm not alone.

The CDC has teams on the ready to be at any U.S. hospital where ebola is suspected. The degree of readiness at the hospitals will vary across the nation and the teams will help in capacities necessary. Shame on the nurses for using ebola as a strike reason. Shame on hospitals for ignoring nurse's needs to the point they feel striking is their only option.

The nurses aren't using Ebola as a reason to strike. It's more about patient care, education, and training. But that training would include protocols and equipment to care for Ebola patients. My DIL is an RN at a Kaiser facility. Not one of the pro-strike information given to her specifically pertains to Ebola.

I regret taking that comment at face value and repeating it. I know better. {#emotions_dlg.blushing}

Oh, don't worry about it. It was a good sound bite and some ran with it. And I know you know better.

I agree with SushiMom. Don't worry about it Free!

In the meantime, the hospitals in the country that have bio-containment units are reporting that they are besieged with critical care nurses wanting to work there.

And I have to admit, if I were younger and back in my critical care days I would be vying to work in one of those units as well. For the critical care junkies, it would be a dream come true. LOL!

Hi September,Smile There were quite a few on this board (gato to name one) who were able to educate and answer questions...WITHOUT ridicule and snide comment. Some while educating still couldn't resist acting, shall we say, "smarter and better" than others.

Re: Why did the Ebola thread close?

I'm going to go out on a limb here, but I will say that the Maine nurse, Kaci, might just be remembered in a very positive way, in the future. I sense she isn't popular now (if posts on this board mean anything). But sometimes...people have to speak up, even if their opinions aren't embraced. I feel she did that. I admire her. Didn't like her, at first, but I've changed my opinion.

I don't think so. She went about her "campaign" in a very unfortunate way. She garnered a lot of publicity and it does appear that's what she wanted. She took a bad situation and made it worse for herself and her neighbors and her state. I can't respect that.

Hi september! I do remember you had very good questions and I don't ever remember you being one that was overly worried.

And thank you for the kind words. I just think it is important at such a time to stay focused on the facts and avoid the hyperbole so that people have the information that they need to know.

But I have to say, I was only one of several that kept posting...there were many others as well. Sushismom knocked my socks off with her knowledge of microbiology!!

So we all got to learn something from each other along the way. And that is a good thing!

Re: Why did the Ebola thread close?

Hello, mominohio. Smile

I didn't see the thread, but usually those kinds of threads get closed down due to the name constant name-calling, ridiculing, snarky replies to those who don't agree, etc. That's usually what happens in those threads. At least from what I've seen anyway.

Re: Why did the Ebola thread close?

I don't think anyone outside the New York tri-state area saw the entire news conference, which lasted almost one hour. It showed what is best about people working together in a calm, organized and intelligent way. I'm proud of my city and have a great deal of confidence in our hospitals and healthcare professionals. Unfortunately, I do not have as much confidence in individuals who might choose to make their own decisions without regard for their community.

I don't, as a rule, participate in Viewpoints and there's a reason why. There simply is not civil and respectful discussion here. Reading the posts, it sounds to me like many of you appear to be patting yourselves on the back that you were right all along. Some of you continue to ridicule and express your disgust with others who, understandably and legitimately, had their doubts and concern and may still have doubts and concern. You have gone completely overboard in assigning "hysteria" and "panic" to posters who have expressed this concern. You have been smug in your opinions and have had little tolerance or respect for others' opinions.

Re: Why did the Ebola thread close?

Scottie, I don't post during the day, and I think a lot of the day posts get zapped before I get online. Sometimes...I did see some of them, and yes, I did see some posters who don't post here often, anymore, swoop in and say negative things.

That's going to happen... but when I've been actively posting here at night about this topic...I'd say that most people have been respectful. It's been informational for me to post about this topic here.

Living in CA...where there hasn't been much discussion, or any cases of Ebola....I know much more about this than anyone else who I know here. Thanks to this board, and other online research.
