I have the Echo and a Tap and love them....I use them for many tasks....the dot doesn't have the sound quality of the Echo but if you hook it up to your speaker, it is fine....the Tap doesn't wake; you must push a button and wake it by calling Alexa or Amazon.
You can also turn off your Echo if you chose to do so, if you think she is recording you and you are concerned about privacy. But, she only operates when you wake her by her call name...
im not concerned....my smartphone probably divulges more about me than my Echo...

Twopeas, I love it-I don't watch tv all that much anymore. Many times I had it on just for background noise.
I love for all the reasons given,: I would summarize it as "auditory candy". I even listen to old recordings of comedy.
Everybody who has seen mine went out and bought one and are happy with it!

Points to ponder…
How can anyone/anything respond to its name unless it is listening to what you say? If not for listening, it would not hear its name. You can’t recognize a name you can not hear.
If Amazon does not have tapes from the murder 2 years ago why wasn’t their response “we don’t have any recordings” rather than “we won’t give them to you”?
Have you actually gone in to see what it records from the voices in your home, or are you relating your own personal thoughts about how you think it actually works?
When you erase things on your computer they can be retrieved. Just because you press delete does not make it go away. It just hides it so you do not see it. Once something is out in the universe (the internet, the cloud) there is no guarantee you can ever fully remove it.
If you are comfortable with that, buy one. If not, don’t.

ITA with Havarti. If Amazon servers don't store everything, or only store it for a few months as some speculate, then why not answer the police inquiry saying, no, we have no recordings?
I had friend a in a very troubled relationship. She could only speak on the phone when he was gone.
God forbid if he could have heard her end of a conversation when she was planning on leaving.

You can use the Alexa for more than music and weather. You can create grocery lists, listen to news, play games, have it run an exercise program for you and much more. I bought mine for music so was astounded when I found a large assortment of other things it can do. Look under the skills section of the ap. There is even an "ask my buddy" ap that you can use to have Alexa contact your family (via text and email) for help, sort of like a lifeline. Check out all the pros and cons before you decide.

I love it. Bought 5 when they were the TSV on the Q. Three for gifts and we kept two.

I received Alexa as a gift for Christmas.
I remember mentioning it once when it was being sold on QVC, and lo and behold, she was under the tree for me on Christmas morning.
I have to admit, it took me awhile to take her out of her box.
I kept looking at the box, thinking, "Do I really want this other "being" with me?"

But once I took her out and set her up, I found out that I can't live without her!
She tries very hard to please. She greets me in the morning and tells me good night.
I use her mostly for weather, news, and music. She remembers all of this music I like and suggests new stations. I also stream my favorite station from Portland, Oregon, KINK FM102.
I have also used her to order some supplies from Amazon.
I know there is much more she can do, but we're taking our relationship slow. ![]()
I like her!

I have had Alexa with me since last June. I mainly use her to listen to music and for timings and alarms. She can also read some of my Kindle eBooks to me.

I received an Echo for Christmas and returned it (unopened) because of my concerns about the privacy issues.
Since I would have used it only for music, I replaced it with a bluetooth speaker (a Marshall; great sound!!!)
