He's coherent enough to stilll be writing well. 

He' never cared much about awards.  It will be interesting if he turns it down.  Some people have.  I think he has earned it though.

I'm thinking that in his case the word "coherent" is pretty subjective. A long life of drugs and alcohol has proven to  make many people less than coherent. He's probably a functional addict.
