We were talking about TV's and cable and VCR's and music things and mentioned that TV's didn't have remotes back when we were growing up. My kids were shocked and asked if we were poor - LOL

i have never known tv's without remote controls!! i can't even imagine having to do that!
when we changed tv's in the living room the new room was as thin as the tv! i immediately went online and bought another to have ""just in case""! it was ""out of stock"" at the time and it took a week before i could get it so it looks like alot of people were having to replace that remote. i am glad i was smart enough to do it before i needed it or the tv would not have been used until it was delivered.

Moxie, they are a very good thing!

I remember a very early remote that was wired. Man, people had to watch their step when walking across the living room!

When was the last time you physically got up and changed the TV channel on the TV...
When I couldn't find the remote. Some tv sets have hard to see touch pad buttons. Our Samsung LCD are pretty much invisible from different angles so even if I am standing next to right by the tv it is easier to use the remote control for this.

Hey Lucy, we had a small portable TV from 1976 that I sat on top of the refrigerator and used until about ten years ago.. it still works but won't get the channels now! It was sold as a collectors item, and covered in a 'USA Bicentennial' design. I actually miss all the dials!

I remember when I bought my first tv, with my own money, in 1976. It was a 19 inch Panasonic, $550. At the time, you could spend an additional $50 and get a wired (yes, wired) remote. I didn't have a lot of money; I'd just started working. I thought to myself "why on earth would I spend an extra $50 just to have something to turn the tv off and on for me. Why would I possibly need that?" And here we are, years later, zillions of channels and lots of options for just watching a tv show.

I don't know if there even is a manual channel changer on any of our TVs. (4)
