When is it time to say goodbye?

My late aunt's 16 year old cat is in the middle phases of kidney disease. He is now eating prescription food and going in for hydration every two weeks. He plays with our dog, runs and jumps and seems to still be enjoying life. The vet would like his levels to be checked every other week and have him come in for hydration more often (although he is not spitting up at all). I sometimes think they are looking to make as much money as possible. The bottom line is that Murray will die from this disease..they say there are no other medications to help him...it's a matter of time.

I had a terrier diagnosed 5 years ago with cancer. I brought him home with painkillers & he lived for 4 days. He was in terrible distress the last night and passed away at home at 6AM, before the vet was open for business. I feel I waited too late with him.

When do we know to take our beloved pets in to the vet for the last time?

It's an agonizing decision.
