When I went to school in Boston and NJ, back in the covered wagon days, we always started the day after Labor Day and got out around Father's Day. This gave us....gasp...the summer off. What a concept. Since ours started today, people have been asking each other on Facebook if their subdivision pools are closing now since the kids are back I school. I'm thinking "it's only August 4th"! Maybe, just maybe an adult or someone without children might like to swim.

Why is it, when I have a 50/50 guess at something, I'm always 100% wrong?

College starts 8/25. The school district I think 9/2.

Hi, gidget, Here in S. Fl the kids got out rather late this year, so I am hoping for after Labor Day, though often it's the last week in August.

It affects me, because I live near _six_ schools, middle schools, elementaries and private church-related schools, and they all have different start times and daily session hours, and so it seems I am dealing with several schools no matter when I am going on errands or to work. The middle-schoolers are the worst, as they are more reckless and don't have those wonderful crossing guards to keep an eye not only on the motorists but on the often antsy, darting children.

August 25 for most schools in South Texas. I remember one year a while back--they had moved the start date of school so early in August, that we teachers started for inservice on July 31. The attitude wasn't good!
