Echocardiagram showed "possible left atrial enlargement"

Have to speak to my doctor, just wondering who has had this and what was your next step? Thank you. EKG and bloodwork was all good.

Re: Echocardiagram showed ""possible left atrial enlargement""

Was this a resting EKG? I would think your Cardiologist would have told you what would be your next step if he was concerned about this. There are many heart procedures so I would not even venture a suggestion as to which one your Cardiologist my choose for you if necessary.

I've had 2 heart attacks and countless EKG and 6 Heart Catheterizations but not for that reason. Blood work and you saying ""are good"" does not mean much. To me ""numbers"" are mandatory for any blood work I have done. I decide what ""is good"" not some arbitrary chart that many doctors like to use.

Best to ask this Cardiologist what it all means. Each person is different and everyone is not given the same treatment(s)for heart or heart valve issues.

If your doctor feels it's necessary, he might recommend a stress test. You said "possible LAE", right. Just leave it up to your Cardiologist. Hopefully, he knows his specialty.

John: She said "ECHOcardiogram" - NOT EKG. Of course she was resting.

This will likely be explored further thru nuclear scans.

You may also want to pose your question on the Health forum. That might give you more replies.

Nobody can really answer this. There are lot of things to take into consideration such as your age, prior medical history, etc.. Only your doctor knows these things.

I believe that if there is any further testing for this, it would probably be a stress test - but then again, he might just take a "wait and see" attitude......

Time will tell and if i were you I wouldn't worry about it. Unless you want to, that is....Wink

ITA on both accounts.

I always get copies of any and all blood work sent to me ("cc" 'd), no matter which one of my doctors ordered it, so that I can see what's low, within normal range, and high. Started this when, at times, I wasn't getting the results the way I should have been - directly from the doctor's office.

Then, I do my research online, and if I have any further questions or concerns, I will present them to my doc and we can discuss what can be done.

You could Google 'left atrial enlargement", just so you have an idea of what you'll be discussing with your physician. And do keep in mind that you must always advocate for yourself; even the best doctors can make mistakes.

Hi sophiamarie,

Boy what a big mistake I made with this one. I've had many Echo's also most of them exercise induced heart rate elevation. Some "with contrast" some without contrast. I know that these were done to check primarily my heart valves as I have one that has had a slight leak for decades now. Last on I had was a few months ago and it has not changed over these many, many years.

My reply would be the same as almost all the Echo's I have had were not "resting". They want the heart rate at it's max, especially so with the "contrasting type of Echo". They check you before you start on the treadmill and the bed is right next to the treadmill as they want you to get on it as quick as possible after the test so the heart rate is seen before it drops too far from it's max level.

Did you see my "call out" to you about the recliners?

E.T.A. Never mind I see you have not replied to it.

Re: Echocardiagram showed ""possible left atrial enlargement""

I had an echocardiogram this past February and I have mild left atrial enlargement. A few days later I had a Thallium stress test. A few weeks prior I had been wearing a 30 day Holter monitor. The reason I saw a cardiologist is that 8 years ago I was diagnosed with a cardiac arrhythmia called premature supraventricular tachycardia, a fancy medical term for palpitations. They are not life threatening in itself but extremely annoying. You constantly feel like you've just been scared out of your skin.

The bottom line is I needed a change in medication and it took care of the problem. The cardiologist did not seem all that concerned about the results of the echo but she did want to see me in one year for a return echo and check up.

I'm sure this is not an unusual condition and you will feel better once you talk to your doctor.

I hope this eases your mind a bit.
